We are a growing duly licenced microfinance institution dedicated to providing affordable and accessible digital financial solutions to individuals and small and medium enterprises in Malawi.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead the operational functions of our digital microfinance company. The COO will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, managing teams, and driving process improvements to ensure efficient delivery of financial services to our customers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in operations, and people management in the financial services industry. The COO provides strategic leadership in operations, risk management, and customer service to drive growth and sustainability of the company’s services.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Leadership
  • Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to develop and implement the company’s strategic plan.
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable operational plans and key performance targets.
  • Drive business transformation and innovation in line with digital financial inclusion goals.
  1. Operations Management
  • Oversee end-to-end operational processes, including loan origination, customer onboarding, disbursements, collections, and customer support.
  • Ensure seamless coordination between technology, credit, finance, and customer service departments.
  • Implement efficient workflows and process automation to enhance productivity and customer experience.
  1. Digital Platform Oversight
  • Work closely with the technology team to ensure the digital lending platform is secure, efficient, and scalable.
  • Oversee product deployment, system integrations, and user experience improvements.
  • Drive digital transformation initiatives to enhance accessibility and service delivery.
  • Drive the adoption of digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and enhance customer engagement
  1. Risk and Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements as set by the Reserve Bank of Malawi and other relevant authorities.
  • Ensure strong internal controls, audit readiness, and data protection standards.
  • Oversee the company’s risk management framework including credit risk and operational risk management, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  1. Performance and Quality Management
  • Develop and monitor operational key performance indicators (KPIs) and service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Continuously review and optimize operational costs, efficiency, and customer satisfaction levels.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, and high performance.
  • Collaborate with customer-facing teams to ensure seamless delivery of financial services.
  1. Team Leadership and Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop operational teams to achieve company goals.
  • Foster collaboration and communication across departments.
  • Ensure effective workforce planning, training, and performance management.
  1. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Support investor relations, regulatory engagements, and strategic partnerships.
  • Maintain relationships with key service providers such as mobile network operators

Key Relationships

    Internal: All staff, Senior Management, Board of Directors

    External: Regulator and other stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Social Science or related field.
  • A minimum of 8 (Eight) years of experience in the financial services industry.
  • Proven track record of leading teams minimum 10 people) and driving process improvements.
  • Strong understanding of microfinance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

 Desired Skills:

  • Experience with digital platforms and technologies (e.g., mobile, web, APIs).
  • Knowledge of data analytics and performance metrics.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (e.g., Reserve Bank of Malawi).

Renumeration

The company offers competitive benefits based on qualifications and experience. Starting basic salary for this position is MK 1,000,000. However, this is negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.
