2.0 BACKGROUND
FAWEMA is implementing the Innovation in Health, Rights and Development (iHEARD) project in collaboration with the UK-based Marie Stopes International (MSI) and their local partner – Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM), MaiKhanda, Farm Radio Trust, Viamo, and Girl Effect (GE) and with support from the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Gender, and Ministry of Health (MoH) specifically the Reproductive Health Directorate (RHD). The iHEARD project is being led by CODE with Farm Radio International (FRI) as the Co-lead through funding from Global Affairs Canada (GAC). The project is being implemented in Malawi at scale nationally, and intensively in the Central Region, specifically in Dowa, Ntchisi and Lilongwe districts.
The main objective of the iHEARD project is to dismantle barriers to Sexual and
Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Malawi. The project also aims to improve the effectiveness of key stakeholders to advocate gender-responsive policies and services through training, The project places the youth at the center of programming through the Youth Advisory Committee including conducting interactive dialogue sessions involving youth and community structures. Improving the SRHR of AGYW (10-25 years) directly contributes to poverty reduction by improving the ability of AGYW to make informed SRHR decisions about their lives and bodies. Evidence shows that improving the health and rights of AGYW also improves the health and wellbeing of their families, communities, and nation.
