Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), is a local non-government organization whose mission is to create, promote and protect an enabling legal and social environment for the full realization of the well-being of sexual minorities and vulnerable populations. CEDEP is a human rights organization established in November 2005, and registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962.

CEDEP is seeking to recruit suitably qualified and experienced Malawians for the following Position to be based at the Head Office, Lilongwe.

 ADVOCACY PROJECT COORDINATOR Location: Head Office, Lilongwe

Supervisor: Executive Director

Position summary

The Project Officer will advocate for enjoyment and protection of the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons and other minority groups to ensure that government and duty holders are responsive to their practical and strategic needs. The officer will work to contribute to CEDEP’s mission of creating an enabling environment and protect the wellbeing of sexual minorities.

Specifically, s/he will:

  • Advocate for equal treatment and enjoyment of human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons and other minority groups.
  • Develop and utilise advocacy channels for the organisation to achieve relevant CEDEP advocacy objectives;
  • Build partnerships and coordinate work with other stakeholders and allies to maximize the chance of securing advocacy wins;
  • Develop and maintain clear lines of communication with advocates and key Stakeholders locally and internationally and use this to inform CEDEP’s advocacy work;
  • Manage relationships and communication with national and international institutions and partner networks.
  • Develop policy positions and other useful resources in relation to the advocacy objectives.
  • Undertake communication and media outreach campaigns to support CEDEP’s advocacy strategy.
  • Provide expertise in the development of concept notes and project proposals which will form the basis of funding submissions.
  • Implement projects, collect information and compile narrative reports on work undertake to donors.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues to produce robust M&E to cover the organization’s advocacy work.
  • Draft reports, submissions and other legal advocacy documents for national, regional and international mechanisms.

Minimum Qualifications for the Jobs

  • Minimum of a university degree in communication, social science, behavioral change communication, strategic communication, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Experience in Advocacy work with minority groups is an added advantage.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.
  • At least two to three years of experience in implementing and managing advocacy projects
