SOS Children’s Villages Malawi

SOS Children’s Villages Malawi is a non-governmental child protection and development organisation established in Malawi in 1991. Our vision is that every child belongs to a family and grows up with love, respect and security. Our mission is to build families for children in need; we help them shape their own futures, and we share in the development of their communities. In pursuit of the vision and mission, we work in collaboration with the Government of Malawi and other partners to implement various projects focusing on child protection and development; entrepreneurship and vocational skills training for young people; livelihood improvement for vulnerable households; child and youth education, as well as advocacy in the areas of child rights and protection. Our programme coverage is country-wide, operating from Chikwawa, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzimba and Mzuzu.

It is in this context that we are looking for suitable candidates to fill the positions of Project Managers for SOS Children’s Villages Malawi’s four programmes, as follows:

Responsible to               : Programme Director
Employment contract    : 2 years, full-time, fixed-term employment contract, renewable upon funding availability and performance

Job Purpose

The Project Manager for the Standard Project will be responsible for managing the overall implementation of alternative care options and family strengthening interventions at the community level,  including establishing and managing effective networks and partnerships at all levels in line with the project agreement, organisational policies, procedures and the organisation’s strategic direction. He/ she will lead the technical and financial management of the project in compliance with overall donor requirements.

Key performance areas and main responsibilities:

Setting up and Functionalizing Family Strengthening Interventions

  • Guide and coordinate the establishment and development of the Community Case Management Committee (CCC) to spearhead the implementation of family strengthening interventions
  • Lead and coordinate the orientation of CCC on vulnerability assessment at the family and community levels
  • Guide and coordinate the formation and functioning of family support groups at the community level.

Managing a range of Alternative Care options

  • Strengthening the implementation of a range of alternative care options under the project in line with government standards and SOS gatekeeping guidelines.
  • Coordinate implementation of the Family Like Care option as per the SOS’s Strategic direction
  • Handling the welfare of SOS Parents and children under the Family Like Care option
  • Coordinate the establishment and management of a transit shelter at the program
  • Ensure that the operation of the transit shelters and FLC adheres to United Nations Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children (UNGACC), the Child Care, Protection and Justice Act and other applicable local and international policies and frameworks.

Coordinate planning, budgeting and implementation of the Standard Project

  • Develop and implement annual plans according to the project’s overall implementation schedule
  • Ensure that the development and implementation of the annual budget for the project are in line with the overall project’s annual budget plans.
  • Ensure inclusive, gender sensitivity in overall planning and budgeting
  • Coordinate the development of emergency preparedness, response and recovery plans

Establish and Strengthen Networks and Partnerships with the community, local and district-level authorities and other service providers

  • Undertaking stakeholder analysis of the SOS Standard Project,
  • Review and manage stakeholders’ profiles.
  • Represent the project in key stakeholder engagement meetings and related gatherings.
  • Lobby stakeholders, including government and non-government, to enhance service delivery among the project-targeted communities and participants

Undertake Monitoring & Evaluation of the Standard Project

  • Lead the development of the project’s monitoring and evaluation plan
  • Facilitate the development of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Keep track of the project implementation processes, progress and key performance indicators
  • Conduct regular monitoring and review of activities aimed at ensuring that the programme continues to provide relevant and quality services that lead to the self-reliance of families and the community
  • Ensure timely updating of the programme database, project files and community-based partners.

Child Safeguarding, Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse (PSHEA) and asset safeguarding

  • Provide leadership and supervise the performance of child safeguarding and PSHEA efforts by ensuring that all child and adult safeguarding policies, procedures and ways of working are successfully implemented within the standard project and/ or in line with the work of the function so that measures are in place and appropriately operationalised.
  • Conduct child safeguarding risk assessments for the standard project and periodically evaluate such risk assessments to ensure that programme implementation responds to emerging child safeguarding issues
  • Ensure that individual staff performance and development needs are met in the area of child safeguarding and PSHEA, and that clear goals are planned and achieved to ensure that child safeguarding and PSHEA are observed and maintained

  The suitable candidate should have the following minimum qualifications and attributes: –

  • Degree in Social Work, Project Management, development studies and any Social Science-related discipline; those with a master’s degree will have an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years of experience in implementing community development or child development-related programmes.
  • Demonstrated Experience in managing the coordination of Family Strengthening Interventions, Alternative Care options, Transit Homes, as well as partnership development, networking and advocacy.
  • Sound understanding of child rights, child development, family and community development, rights-based programming.
  • Up-to-date communication, documentation and reporting skills.
  • Self-starter, Ability to work in a team. Respect for different cultures and religions.
  • Strong family values. Ability to work with minimum supervision
