The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments: and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization.

The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job title: Industrial Metrology Officer
Grade: BS6
Reporting to: Senior Industrial Metrology Officer
Department: Metrology Services
Section: Industrial Metrology
Responsible for: Senior Industrial Metrology Technician
Number of Posts : Four (4)

Job Purpose

To ensure effective and efficient implementation of industrial metrology activities.

Key roles and responsibilities

  1. Daily management of a designated laboratory l.e. Temperature, Mass, Volume, Pressure, Force or Length Laboratory
  2. Supervising Senior Industrial Metrology Technicians;
  3. Facilitating the calibration of weighing and measuring instruments;
  4. Planning calibration trips;
  5. Maintaining accuracy of working standards;
  6. Creating and maintaining equipment files for measuring and test equipment requiring calibration;
  7. Drafting reminder letters to clients on equipment due for calibration;
  8. Keeping and updating records for calibrated equipment;
  9. Initiating maintenance of equipment;
  10. Compiling weekly progress reports; and
  11. Appraising the performance of Senior Industrial Metrology Technicians.

Required Academic Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should possess:

  1. A Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Physics or A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Biomedical, Telecommunications, Metallurgy Engineering or Metrology;
  2. At least 2 years’ practical experience in a related field.
