Introduction and Background
The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is Malawi’s national public service broadcaster, established in 1964. Originallyoperating as a single radio service (now MBC Radio 1), the Corporation has since expanded to include Radio 2 FM and national television services following the merger of MBC and Television Malawi Limited in 2011. Established under the Communications Act, 2016, MBC is mandated to inform, educate, and entertain the public; promote free and informed opinion on matters of national interest; reflect Malawi’s cultural diversity; and uphold human rights, the rule of law, and constitutional values through objective, professional, and independent programming. In pursuit of its strategic mandate and institutional growth, MBC now seeks to recruit suitably qualified and experienced Malawian professionals to fill the following Executive Management positions: DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
The the position is tenable at the MBC Head Office in Blantyre on a three (3)-year employment contract. These are highly demanding executive roles requiring individuals with proven leadership capacity and the ability to drive operational excellence, institutional transformation, sound human resource management, and administrative innovation aimed at positioning MBC as a rejuvenated, vibrant, and competitive public service broadcaster.
1. DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
a) Job Purpose
To direct, coordinate, and define the creative vision, strategic direction, and scheduling of content for TV and radio networks.
b) Required Academic Qualifications
- Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in Journalism, Humanities (majoring in English or Drama), or Communication and Cultural Studies from accredited institutions.
c) Relevant Work Experience
- At least eight (8) years’ experience in a relevant field.
d) Key Competencies and Skills
- Strong creative vision and content development skills
- Ability to evaluate programming using audience surveys and feedback
- Real-time decision-making during live broadcasts
- Budget planning and expenditure monitoring
- Collaboration with commercial teams to maximize audience engagement
- Performance management and team coordination
- Knowledge of broadcasting regulations and guidelines
