Background
The National Audit Office (NAO) is a Supreme Audit Institution established under the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Public Audit Act, mandated to provide independent assurance to Parliament and the public on the prudent use and management of public resources in order to promote transparency, accountability and good governance.
The Office conducts Financial, Compliance, Forensic, Performance and Information Systems audits across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Local Authorities, Statutory Corporations and all public institutions.
The Office is, therefore, inviting suitably qualified, competent and result-oriented individuals to apply for various vacant positions that have arisen within the National Audit Office.

Position Title: Deputy Auditor General – Financial & Compliance Audit
Grade: AO-03
Department/Division: Financial & Compliance Audit
Reporting to: Senior Deputy Auditor General – Financial & Compliance Audit
Terms of Employment: 3-year fixed contract, renewal based on performance
Purpose of the post
To provide strategic and technical leadership in the management and execution of audit operations
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Directing the development and implementation of audit policies, strategies, procedures, and standards
- Planning and coordinating audit engagements
- Allocating tasks and resources to Assistant Auditors General
- Attending to entry and exit meetings of financial and compliance audits
- Conducting risk and materiality assessments
- Reviewing and approving audit reports and findings
- Ensuring that audits meet the standard quality and are timely produced
- Following up on implementation of the audit recommendations
- Supervising, mentoring and appraising performance of Assistant Auditors General of financial and compliance audits
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Senior Deputy Auditor General.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Auditing or Business Administration
- Must have Professional certification (e.g., ACCA, CPA, CIMA, CFA)
- Minimum of 8 years’ post graduate progressive experience in Financial and Compliance Auditing with at least 4 years at Senior Management or Assistant Auditor General/ Chief Auditor grade in the public service.
Key Competencies and Attributes
- Proven track record in directing complex Finance and Compliance Audits, formulating policies and managing multidisciplinary teams
- Strong skills in financial statement analysis, risk-based finance audit and compliance-based audit, planning and quality control reviews
- Proficiency in audit management software
- Thorough knowledge of public sector auditing standards, government account standards and financial legislation.
