POSITION: LEGAL OFFICER – CLAIMS & INSURANCE

CIC Africa Malawi Limited invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Legal Officer – Claims & Insurance.

Reporting to and working closely with the Heed of Legel, the successful candidate will support the Company in managing insurance claims-related legal matters, contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution, ensuring that the Company’s legal and commercial interests are protected.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work under the guidance of and support the Head of Legal in all claims-related legal matters.
  • Provide legal support on insurance claims, including claims assessment, coverage interpretation, repudiation reviews, and dispute resolution.
  • Review insurance policies, endorsements, reinsurance arrangements, and claims documentation to assess legal exposure and advise management accordingly.
  • Assist in managing claims-related litigation and disputes, including negotiations and out-of-court settlements.
  • Liaise with, appoint, and issue instructions to external legal counsel on claims and litigation matters, in consultation with the Head of Legal, ensuring timely updates and cost control.
  • Monitor and follow up on matters handled by external counsel, including review of monthly claims and litigation status reports.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions and briefs for review by the Head of Legal.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal instruments supporting insurance and business operations.
  • Support regulatory compliance in relation to claims handling, including engagement with the Insurance regulator where required.
  • Ensure safe custody, organisation, and mainterance of claims-related and legal documentation.
  • Interview clients, assessors, and witnesses and prepare summaries and legal documentation in support of claims matters.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Legal from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB)-
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law
  • Admission to the Bar and a valid practicing certificate.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years; post-qualification experience, with experience in insurance claims, litigation, or dispute resolution.
  • Sound understanding of insurance law, claims management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong analytical, drafting, and negotiation skils
  • High level of organisation, attention to detail, and abilty to manage multiple matters concurrently
  • Ability to work independently while effectively supporting senior legal leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
