VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TRAINEE CIVIL ENGINEERS
Name of Project: Upgrading of Mangochi – Makanjira (S129) Road
Financing: Saudi Fund for Development (SFD)
Assignment Title: Consultancy Services for the Design Validation and Construction Supervision of Mangochi – Makanjira (S129) Road.
1. Objectives of the project
The Goverment of Malawi through the Roads Authority (RA) intends to use resources from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) towards the cost of undertaking a design validation and construction supervision of the rehabilitation of Mangochi – Makanjira (S129) Road. The improvement of the road will contribute in achieving the Government’s programme of developing the road sector in the country by raising the standards of national road network and connecting the country with neighboring countries. Furthermore, improvement in the efficiency of traffic and safety measures on the current road, integration of the road network in the country, will help in improving the agricultural activities and social services, reduce travel time and operation costs, which will lead to reduction in travel and transportation costs as well as maintenance costs for the current road section.
The Mangochi-Makanjira (S129) road is a Secondary Road, S129 on the South East of Lake Malawi, which is approximately 131km long. The road traverses through the Lakeshore Plain, which is bordered by the Rift Valley Scarp Zone on the immediate east and the Eastern Plateau further to the East on the boundary with Mozambique. Due to this topographic layout, the road crosses numerous streams and rivers that are tributaries to Lake Malawi. The notable rivers crossed are Lusalumwe, Namaunya, Nkuli, Mbasi, Lungwena, Mbwasi, Lutende, Unga, Lugola, and Luwesya.
The project shall be performed in three phases. The first two phases are lump sum assignments based on deliverables, and the final phase is a time-based assignment.
2. Institutional support and project management
The Roads Authority (RA) was created by the Roads Act 2005 to ensure that public roads are constructed, maintained or rehabilitated at all times; and advise the Minister, and where appropriate, the Minister responsible for Local Government on the preparation and efficient and effective implementation of the Annual National Roads Programme.
In pursuit of its mandate, the Roads Authority (RA) has secured the services of an Engineering Consultant and will procure a contractor for the road reconstruction with funding from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), Badea, Kuwait Fund and Opec Fund for international Development. The Terms of Reference (ToR) include training of Four (4) individuals who will be attached to the project in the field of Civil Engineering.
3. Terms and attributes of recruitment
The Roads Authority is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualifed Malawians to be attached to the project for capacity building during the project implementation for Design Review and Construction Supervision.
The Trainees will be attached to the project and participate in the day-to-day implementation of the project and will specifically be expected to understudy the key personnel on the project for capacity building in the various areas of specialization.
The successful candidates will be under individual employment contracts for the entire duration of the Design Review and construction period of not less than 24 calendar months. The desired candidates are expected to have the following minimum qualifications:
- A minimum of a University Degree in Civil Engineering obtained from a reputable University in the past three academic years:
- Must be 32 years of age or younger by the time of submission of application;
- A desire to work in a fast-paced, hands-on Transport / Works environment with technicians, contractors, and equipment;
- Strong thinking/problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate in teams;
- Strong communication, interpersonal, time management and analytical skills, Highly motivated, self-driven, and eager to learn new skills;
- Computer: Good user knowledge of MS Office programs;
- Language: Fluent in oral and written English;
