JOB TITLE : Reinsurance Officer
REPORTING TO : Underwriting Supervisor
DIRECT REPORTS : N/A
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
3 Years in general insurance underwriting or reinsurance operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in insurance and risk management, Mathematics, or Actuarial Science. And/ or Diploma in Insurance (CII) or progress towards ACII
JOB PURPOSE
To safeguard the company’s capital by transferring portions of risk to third parties, ensuring portfolio profitability, compliance with internal risk appetites, and timely execution of reinsurance operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC TASKS
- Risk Evaluation & Placement
- Evaluate complex insurance risks for reinsurance suitability.
- Review treaty and facultative submissions against underwriting guidelines.
- Arrange facultative reinsurance placements, prepare signing slips, and follow up.
- Conduct pre-loss risk surveys.
- Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reinsurance reports for management and regulators.
- Maintain accurate records of recoveries for audit and regulatory purposes.
- Monitor exposures to ensure compliance with retention limits.
- Conduct periodic audits of underlying portfolios.
- Financial & Operational Management
- Process treaty cessions for new business, renewals, and alterations.
- Calculate and reconcile reinsurance premiums, commissions, and fees.
- Collaborate with Finance for reconciliations, payments, and receivables.
- Manage placement process ensuring all program layers are fully subscribed.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with Claims on treaty performance and reinsurance eligibility for large claims.
- Maintain professional communication with reinsurers and brokers.
- Attend to internal and external customer queries.
- Build and maintain quality relationships with clients and brokers.
- General Duties
- Care for company property.
- Perform any other duties assigned by seniors.
Competencies
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in office software and data modeling (Excel, VBA is a plus).
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Problem-solving and solution-oriented mindset.
- Knowledge of company products, services, policies, and procedures.
- Attention to detail and regulatory awareness.
Key Relationships
- External: Brokers, Clients, Agents – for business continuity and relationship management.
- Internal: Claims, Finance, Underwriting, Compliance – for operational alignment and regulatory compliance.
