POSITION: PORTFOLIO MANAGER BASED IN THYOLO HEAD OFFICE

Mphunzitsi SACCO, a leading and fast-growing member-owned financial cooperative in Malawi, invites applications from suitably qualified, proactive, and ethical professionals for the position of Portfolio Manager. Job Purpose:
To ensure the integrity, performance, and compliance of the SACCO’s loan and investment portfolios. The Portfolio Manager is responsible for strategic oversight, risk mitigation, and operational management of the loan book, ensuring adherence to the Lending and Investment Policy, maintaining delinquency below regulatory thresholds, supervising recovery activities, and optimizing portfolio returns.

This role balances strategic planning with hands-on portfolio monitoring to safeguard the SACCO’s assets and ensure financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Portfolio Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive investment and lending strategies aligned with the SACCO’s strategic plan.
  • Set portfolio performance targets and benchmarks for loan growth, quality, and investment returns.

2) Loan Portfolio Management & Integrity

  • Oversee the quality, performance, and growth of the SACCO’s loan portfolio.
  • Ensure allloan disbursements are accurately captured and reconciled in the financial system.

3) Investment Management

  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend viable investment opportunities aligned with the SACCO’s risk appetite.
  • Support the Head of Finance in monitoring investment performance and ensuring compliance with investment policies.

4) Risk Management & Compliance

  • Supervise the Loan Recovery Assistants, setting performance targets and providing guidance.
  • Oversee the negotiation and formalization of repayment plans with delinquent members.

5) Recovery & Delinquency Management

  • Supervise the Loan Recovery Assistants, setting performance targets and providing guidance.

6) Reporting, Analysis & Process Improvement

  • Prepare detailed weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual portfolio performance reports for the Head of Finance.
  • Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to support decision-making.

7) Stakeholder Engagement & Supervision

  • Build and maintain relationships with members, payroll administrators, debt collectors, and legal partners.
  • Educate members and staff on portfolio policies, repayment obligations, and financial discipline.
  • Represent the Finance Department in relevant internal and external forums.

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CFA) is an advantage.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years in portfolio management, credit risk, or investment analysis, preferably within a SACCO, microfinance, or banking environment. Proven supervisory experience is required.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of portfolio management, credit risk, RBM regulations, cooperative laws, and investment principles.
  • Skills: Exceptional analytical, financial modeling, and reporting skills, Strong leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities., High proficiency in MS Office (Advanced Excel), portfolio management software, and core banking systems, Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Attributes: Strategic thinker, high integrity, proactive, detail-oriented, resilient under pressure, and member-focused.
