Background

Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM) is a Malawian Non-Governmental Healthcare Organization established in 1987. BLM provides quality Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare including HIVIAIDS information and interventions. BLM is a senior member of the Marie Stopes International (MSI) Partnership which works in 43 countries. We exist to improve quality of life in Malawi through family planning and reproductive health care services. We serve over 800,000 clients annually and makes a significant contribution to national family planning objectives. The organization has national coverage, operating through 23 clinics, and numerous outreach clinic sites.

BLM is seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Sales and Marketing Officer to drive the growth and sustainability of its Social Marketing channel.

Sales and Marketing Officer
Location: Support Office, Lilongwe
Reporting Line: Sales and Marketing Manager

The Sales and Marketing Officer is primarily responsible for driving the development and expansion of family planning and reproductive health services through socially marketed products. The role supports product development, branding, and marketing activities in alignment with BLM’s strategic priorities and in agreement with MSI. The social marketing channel also aims to generate revenue to subsidize and support BLM’s operations in Malawi. In addition, the role ensures excellence in product quality and a strong customer-focused approach across all distribution channels.

This is a key strategic role dedicated to the development of the social marketing channel.

The position reports to the Sales and Marketing Manager and works closely with colleagues in the Support Office and across relevant operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Develop and grow the social marketing channel in line with BLM’s strategic plan and MSI partnership values.
  • Achieve agreed sales, revenue, and profitability targets.
  • Produce weekly and monthly performance reports, including services delivered,
    CYP generation, and profit and loss analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements related to the provision of sexual and reproductive health services in the private sector.
  • Manage relationships with distributors, warehouses, and suppliers, including procurement of products.
  • Ensure availability of marketing and training materials at points of sale and maintain brand visibility.
  • Uphold minimum standards for product marketing and merchandising.
  • Work collaboratively with Finance, Compliance, Internal Audit, and Clinical Quality teams to ensure strong internal controls and adherence to financial processes.
  • Support the development of integrated marketing and demand creation strategies across BLM operations.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor sales and performance trends and identify opportunities for strategic interventions to support growth and sustainability of the social marketing channel.

Anti-Fraud, Bribery and Corruption

  • Support and enforce a comprehensive internal audit programme across private sector services in collaboration with BLM and MSI Internal Audit teams.
  • Ensure full compliance with BLM and MSI anti-fraud, bribery, and corruption policies.
  • Induct new staff on these policies and take appropriate disciplinary action where breaches occur.
  • Lead by example and model BLM’s zero-tolerance approach to fraud, bribery, and corruption.

External and Internal Representation

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with partners in the pharmaceutical and private sector in Malawi.
  • Represent BLM and MSI in relevant forums and advocate for family planning in line with organisational strategies.
  • Identify and develop partnership opportunities that support channel growth.
  • Contribute to MSl’s global learning by documenting and sharing lessons on marketing and product development.
  • Consistently role model MSI core values and behaviours.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a university degree in Health Sciences, Marketing, Social Sciences, International Development, Business Administration, or a related field.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in sales and marketing, preferably within retail or pharmaceutical markets.
  • Experience in social marketing is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop a clear strategic vision and translate it into operational work plans.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, influencing, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively “sell” ideas and concepts internally and externally.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Possession of a valid C1 driving licence.
