The Malawi–Liverpool–Wellcome Programme (MLW) is seeking to hire an IT Network & Infrastructure Officer who shall be based within the Information & Communication Technology department and reporting to the HPC & IT Infrastructure Manager.

Responsibilities

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE):

The Network & IT Infrastructure Officer will ensure the smooth operation, maintenance, and security of MLW’s network and IT infrastructure. The role includes supporting High-Performance Computing (HPC) deployments, assisting HPC users, and ensuring connectivity, performance, and resilience of all network systems. This role provides both proactive infrastructure management and responsive technical support, enabling MLW’s research and operational teams to work effectively.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Network Management

  • Install, configure, monitor, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure (LAN, WAN, wireless, firewalls, VPNs).
  • Ensure high availability, performance, and security of network systems.
  • Monitor bandwidth usage and optimize for HPC workloads.
  • Manage VLANs, routing, switching, and IP addressing.

IT Infrastructure Support

  • Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot servers (Linux and Windows) and storage systems.
  • Support virtualization environments and cloud-integrated solutions.
  • Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of infrastructure.

HPC Support

  • Assist in deployment and maintenance of HPC nodes, storage, and network interconnects.
  • Provide first-line support for HPC users, including job submission, data transfer, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with the HPC & IT Infrastructure Lead to optimize performance for scientific workloads.

Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain network security measures including firewalls, access controls, and monitoring tools.
  • Support compliance with MLW’s security policies and ISO 27001 standards.
  • Report and assist in remediation of security incidents.

Service Delivery

  • Provide 2nd/3rd line technical support for network and server issues.
  • Follow ITIL-based incident, problem, and change management processes.
  • Maintain a customer-oriented approach in interactions with researchers and staff.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • At least 5 years’ relevant experience.
  • ITIL service delivery certifications or CCNA certifications are recommended
