Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences (ECOHS), established in 1946 is a constituent college of the University of Livingstonia and a member institution of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM). The College is owned by the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia and is committed to the training of competent healthcare professionals grounded in Christian values and guided by strong professional ethics. The College aims at providing a conducive teaching and learning environment that promotes excellence in health sciences education and contributes to the strengthening of Malawi’s healthcare system. To achieve this goal, ECOS continuously strives to strengthen its academic and administrative structures in order to support effective service delivery and institutional growth. Therefore, the College wishes to fill the existing gap in the administration section and invites suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant position.

Position: College Principal
Grade: E (Government Scale)
Reports to: Board Chairperson
Contract Terms: Fixed
Duration: Four (4) years and it is renewable based on performance

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Minimum of a Master’s degree in any of the following; Nursing/Midwifery, Medicine/ Pharmacy or any other health related field. Those with a PhD will have an added advantage
  2. Registered with a relevant regulatory body
  3. At least 10years of relevant experience in senior management at a higher education institution
  4. Visionary, professional integrity, Strong interpersonal and team building skills
  5. A committed Christian well versed with the doctrines of the C.C.A.P Synod of Livingstonia

SUMMARY OF JOB

The Principal reports directly to the Board of Trustees of the College and she is responsible for all programs and services necessary for the operation of the College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Planning

  1. Facilitate the development and review of the College policies.
  2. Determine and set College operating standards.
  3. Establish overall College organizational framework.
  4. Determine the needs and future direction of the College.
  5. Facilitate the development of long and short term goals and objectives, organizational structure and staffing complement

2. Organizing

  1. Directs the implementation of College policies and programs in the operational and educational activities of the college
  2. Initiate action plans to implement College goals and objectives.
  3. Communicate significant information regarding College-wide developments to all segments of the College.
  4. Translate College priorities into specific College goals as appropriate.
  5. Constantly reassess all College operations to determine appropriateness to student’s needs.
  6. Foster a spirit of team work among all staff and sections.
  7. Prepare College annual reports and submit to College Board.

3. Staffing

  1. Ensure compliance with Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity standards in all the staff recruitment and promotions.
  2. Develop a consistent and fair professional staff performance evaluation system for the College.
    Responsible for a viable staff and faculty development program for the College.

4. Finances

  1. Provide an effective overall budget building and budget maintenance system for the College.
  2. Communicate financial needs of the College to the Board and or Synod
  3. Assess ways to move funds across departmental, divisional lines to meet the emergent needs of the College.
  4. Provide for a fair and equitable distribution of resources within the College.

5. Supervision

  1. Serve as overall College Supervisor.
  2. Supervise and coordinate all programs and services.
  3. Maintain College personnel records in conjunction with the Human Resources and Finance Offices.

6. Student Relations

  1. Ensure that students’ interests and needs are represented in College Policy formulation (advocacy).
  2. Personally function as a source of appeal for students experiencing serious problems or needs.
  3. Promote student-initiated programs among Faculty and Staff.

7. Civic Responsibilities

  1. Promote the interest of the College in all formal and informal community contacts.
  2. Assume leadership and citizenship roles in the community that both contribute to the common good and provide meaningful input to the College.
  3. Explore, on an ongoing basis, ways in which the College can improve its marketing and recruitment efforts.

8. Professional Responsibilities

  1. Represent the College in various professional capacities on local, and national levels.
  2. Responsible for a viable faculty and staff development program for the College.
  3. Encourage professional growth and development among the College employees.
  4. Administer all policies and procedures fairly and consistently.
  5. Encourage performance at the highest possible level.
  6. Allow for and encourage creativity.
  7. Make the work environment conducive to achieving College goals.

Other responsibilities:

  1. To serve as the secretary of the College Board.
  2. lo represent the College as its official spokesman to the public
  3. Any other as assigned by the Board and the Synod Trustees from time to time
