POSITION SUMMARY
The Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist (M&E Specialist) will be responsible for collecting school leader surveys, teaching quality data, and classroom observation data from approximately 50-60 schools around Malawi (including Central and Southern regions). This will involve interviews with school proprietors, teacher mentors, teachers, occasionally parents, and classroom observation data of live lessons in classrooms. This data allows us to analyze the quality of schools and provide targeted training with the aim of aiding an improvement in conditions for learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
School Quality Data Collection:
- Conduct yearly surveys in ~50-60 schools on school quality and behavior and school leadership knowledge and practice with school proprietors to gather relevant data on school quality and assess improved school leadership schools.
- Conduct yearly classroom observations (COB) in ~50-60 schools to assess the quality of classroom instruction, teaching concepts, and methods applied in the classroom.
- Conduct interviews with school proprietors, teachers, and parents to gather relevant data on school quality.
- Conducts yearly surveys of EduQuality teachers and teacher mentors to assess progress.
- Ensure accurate and comprehensive documentation of the data collected in a timely manner.
- Occasionally support other data collection and documentation needs as requested by the implementation team
- Collaborate with the M&E Associate, M&E Manager and MERL Lead to identify trends, patterns, and areas requiring improvement.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration:
- Collaborate with school proprietors, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to facilitate data collection and promote engagement in improvement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, or a related field
- Previous experience collecting data through digital surveys and observation.
- Willingness and ability to travel to collect data. This will involve independently organizing public transportation and accommodations.
- Highly competent users of tablets, laptop computers, and other technology
- Experience in the education sector is strongly desirable, but not required.
- Strong desire to learn and improve technical and analytical skills.
- Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from management to accomplish objectives.
- Creative problem solver that leverages critical thinking ability into unique solutions to complex problems and communicates those solutions.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Written and verbal fluency in English, and additional 1 or 2 local languages (Chichewa or Chitumbuka) required. Must be able to attend & fully participate in meetings conducted in English.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Up to 80% domestic travel required annually.
- Must be able to travel with minimal notice and maximum flexibility.
- Must be willing to travel independently.
