The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a University and Centre of Excellence in health education, research, and innovation whose mission is ‘to advance knowledge, professional competencies, skills, and innovations in health sciences through high-quality student-centred and innovative education and research that responds to and influences the global/national policy, health, and development needs in an efficient, sustainable, and result-oriented manner’.
In fulfillment of its vision and as part of its income-generating strategy, the University provides services on a commercial basis at its Clinics, which are situated at Mount Pleasant in Blantyre and Old KCN campus in Lilongwe. These clinics operate as outpatients and have a team of specialist doctors in different areas of medicine.
The University is inviting applications from suitably qualified Malawians to join the Clinic on the following position:
Laboratory Technician (Lilongwe – 1 position)
Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the smooth operation of the laboratory. He/she will be expected to conduct themselves in all matters relating to their employment, in accordance with the best practice and relevant ethical and professional standards and guidelines as determined by the Medical Council of Malawi.
Contract Duration
The successful candidate will be offered a two-year contract, which will be subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Among others, the Laboratory Technician shall perform the following duties:
- Collecting and preparing patients’ specimens.
- Performing routine tests in accordance with detailed instructions
- Setting up and cleaning laboratory equipment and disinfecting laboratory wares
- Maintaining general cleanliness of the laboratory
- Collecting, processing and storage of biological samples
- Conducting relevant laboratory assays with proper documentation of results and record keeping
- Timely ordering of laboratory consumables
- Carrying out other duties related to the job, as reasonably requested by the Clinic management
- Supporting the supervision of laboratory students
Required Qualifications, Experience and Attributes
- Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Services (honors)
- At least 2 years’ experience in a busy environment
- Trained in customer care
- Willing to work during odd hours
- High level of integrity
