Project Background
The purpose of the Global Health Supply Chain (GHS) program – Procurement and Supply Management (PSM) project is to ensure the uninterrupted supply of health commodities in support of USG-funded public health initiatives around the world. The project provides direct procurement and supply chain management support to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). In supporting USG-funded global health activities, PSM will develop and manage a wide array of services for health commodity procurement and related systems strengthening technical assistance encompassing different elements of a comprehensive supply chain.
At the country level, GHSC-PSM supports country strategies and priorities that fall under the following three project objectives:
- Global Commodity Procurement and Operational Support
- Systems Support
- Global Collaboration to Improve Long-Term Availability of Health Commodities.

We are currently seeking qualified professionals for the following position:
JOB TITLE: MCH and Nutrition Supply Chain Specialist
JOB LOCATION: Lilongwe, Malawi
REPORTS TO: PSM Technical Director, GHSC-PSM
Position Summary
The MCH and Nutrition Supply Chain Specialist will provide technical and operational support to the Ministry of Health (MOH), particularly the Reproductive Health Department (RHD) and the Department of Nutrition, to strengthen the supply chain for Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and Nutrition commodities. The RHD and Department of Nutrition are responsible for the Nutrition and MCH Supply Chains within the MOH. The Specialist will coordinate forecasting, quantification, procurement, distribution, and data management activities to ensure consistent availability of essential commodities, in line with USG legal and policy requirements. This role involves close collaboration with government stakeholders, donors, and implementing partners to improve supply chain performance and support the introduction of new products.
Key Responsibilities
Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Supply Chain
- Provide supply chain systems support to the Ministry of Health.
- Facilitate coordination of MCH commodity supply chain activities through the RHCS Technical Working Group and other relevant platforms.
- Support planning and implementation for the introduction of new MCH products, as required, and in line with USG legal and policy requirements.
- Lead and support forecasting and supply planning activities, including QAT training, annual quantification exercises, report development, and regular updates to supply plans.
- Coordinate procurement of MCH commodities on behalf of MOH/RHD, engaging relevant partners and stakeholders.
- Facilitate coordination for procurement and delivery of approved MCH commodities using USG funding and based on the forecasted need and supply plan.
- Monitor MCH commodities procurement pipeline to ensure timely delivery of planned shipments.
- Monitor stock status and facilitate redistribution of MCH commodities to address imbalances at facility level.
- Support distribution planning for donated and USG-funded MCH commodities.
- Oversee collection, reporting, and analysis of logistics data for MCH commodities, including OpenLMIS support and coordination with MOH departments.
- Conduct site-level visits to improve MCH commodity management, with emphasis on cold-chain managed items (e.g., Oxytocin).
- Manage procurement and supply of CAP equipment (Vayu devices) and associated consumables.
- Participate in and attend key meetings and technical working groups with other supply chain stakeholders, donors, partners, and the Ministry of Health
Nutrition Supply Chain
- Ensure inclusion of nutrition products in the annual quantification exercise and contribute to report development.
- Support forecasting of nutrition commodities through QAT training for MOH and partner staff.
- Coordinate procurement of Nutrition commodities on behalf of MOH, engaging relevant partners and stakeholders.
- Procure and deliver selected Nutrition commodities using USG funding and based on the forecasted need and supply plan.
- Monitor Nutrition commodities procurement pipeline to ensure timely delivery of planned shipments.
- Monitor stock status and facilitate redistribution of Nutrition commodities to address imbalances at facility level.
- Support distribution planning for donated and USG-funded Nutrition commodities.
- Oversee collection, reporting, and analysis of logistics data for Nutrition commodities, including OpenLMIS support and coordination with MOH departments.
- Conduct site-level visits to improve Nutrition commodity management at facility level.
- Participate and attend key meetings and technical working groups with other supply chain stakeholders, donors, partners, and the Ministry of Health.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Pharmacy, Supply Chain Management, or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- At least ten years’ professional experience in public health supply chain system management. Specific experience managing MCH and Nutrition commodities highly desirable
- At least seven years’ experience working in the Malawi public health sector supply chain.
- Proven experience in forecasting, quantification, procurement, and distribution planning.
- Strong understanding of health systems and government coordination mechanisms.
- Experience with logistics data systems such as OpenLMIS.
- Knowledge about or experience with delivery of MCH and Nutrition services in Malawi public health sector including applicable protocols/standards, challenges etc.
- Experience working on US government-funded health programs is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of procurement process and of order tracking
- Ability to nurture and sustain productive relationships with Senior MOH officials at various levels and to support MOH leverage resources from other donors/implementing partners to ensure MCH and Nutrition commodity security
- International project management experience an advantage
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Proven ability to work as a part of a team but self-managing of own time
- Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Level of Effort and Location
This long-term position will be based out of Lilongwe, Malawi.
Supervision
The MCH and Nutrition Supply Chain Specialist will report to the PSM Technical Director during the assignment.
