Water For People currently working with local districts councils of Chikwawa, Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Neno and Ntchisi implementing a long term commitment towards access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene through Everyone Forever model. The Sanitation Officer will be responsible for the effective planning and implementation of sustainable sanitation and hygiene interventions in collaboration with communities, schools and other relevant stakeholders in the focus EF districts. S/he will work closely with sanitation entrepreneurs and stakeholders on technology enhancement to effectively expand sanitation businesses that support improved sanitation and hygiene services to willing households.
Job Description
- Initiate and test new sanitation technologies that are aimed at improving sanitation businesses among entrepreneurs.
- Capture feedback on performance of existing and new sanitation technologies with a view of improving technology efficiency.
- Support communities in targeted areas to establish and develop sustainable sanitation businesses and other mechanisms for effective extension of sanitation services in the target areas.
- Build the capacity of local private sector to provide sanitation services and management of sanitary facilities.
- Plan and organize identification of sanitation service providers and take part in training the sanitation institutions and service providers identified.
- Facilitate school WASH interventions aimed at improving hygiene behavior among learners in public primary schools
- Facilitate the promotion of sanitation marketing as an approach to extending sanitation services in the target areas.
- Provide technical support to Water For People partners necessary for the improvement of the sanitation and hygiene situation in the targeted areas.
- Implement activities in accordance with the Malawi Sanitation Strategic Plan outlining clear targets of performance, measuring actual performance against the targets, and making the necessary corrections.
Measurement of actual performance shall be done with all stakeholders. - Facilitate participatory partnerships with entrepreneurs necessary for the improvement of sanitation services in the targeted areas
- Develop interventions that promote safe sanitation and improved hygiene practices and behaviors.
- Facilitate personal and home hygiene promotion in the targeted communities and public primary schools.
- Conduct sanitation institutional analyses and determine effective working relationships with Water For People in the extension of sanitation services to willing households in peri-urban areas.
- Work closely with Malawi program specialists on implementation issues of water and sanitation.
- Provide timely feedback to all the stakeholders and partners on matters related to sanitation service delivery
- Participate and contribute towards Malawi program reports on both sanitation and water supply interventions.
- Any other duties assigned from time to time.
Person Attributes
- She/he is a hands-on person with field/office hour work ration of 85/15
- She/he has a hands-on passion for feacal sludge management.
- She/he is conversant with sanitation and hygiene promotion approaches such as Sanitation Marketing, Social Marketing, CLTS, PHAST and similar.
- She/he is a self-starter, innovative, proactive and able to work with minimal supervision
- She/he has the energy to persistently work in demanding peri- urban environments.
Qualification
- Degree in Community Development, Public Health, Social Development, Community Education, and other related disciplines.
Experiences
- Vast (5-10 years) traceable experience in the field of sanitation and hygiene, community and social development.
