Principal Accountability:

The Communications and Advocacy Manager will play a key role in supporting all aspects of CAMFED Malawi’s communications work. This includes planning, preparing, editing, and managing digital content for both internal and external audiences, ensuring all materials adhere strictly to CAMFED’s child protection guidelines. The role is also responsible for leading the organization’s partnership and relationship development, knowledge management, and strategic communications and advocacy efforts, aimed at enhancing visibility, influence, and impact in line with CAMFED Malawi’s mission and strategic goals.

Who we are

CAMFED (the Campaign for Female Education) is internationally recognized as a leader in girls’ education, for its child protection policy and practice, and as a voice for girls’ education and women’s empowerment at the highest levels. Founded in 1993, CAMFED supports girls throughout their primary and secondary school years and supports women to transition to productive and fulfilling livelihoods and onto leadership, as role models, activists, and philanthropists. CAMFED operates in Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. CAMFED began working in Malawi in 2009, and is currently operating in all the districts, working closely with the Ministry of Education.

Specific Accountabilities:

Knowledge management and Communications

  • Lead the strategic communication of CAMFED’s innovative approaches, achievements, and impact to key audiences, including donors, policymakers, and development practitioners, through print and digital media, as well as targeted events and forums.
  • Develop CAMFED Malawi’s Communications Plan to support the wider CAMFED International Communications Plan
  • Oversee the development and management of multimedia content, including documentaries, video shoots, film footage, and photographic materials, ensuring alignment with strategic communication goals and brand standards.
  • Coordinate and support the organization of public events, forums, and stakeholder engagements in collaboration with Programme Managers, to disseminate research findings, showcase program best practices, and advance advocacy objectives.
  • Gather, edit, and curate compelling case studies, success stories, and field experiences that highlight the impact of CAMFED Malawi’s programs, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with organizational messaging.
  • Disseminate and promote stories and publications across multiple channels, including email, HiBob, brochures, leaflets, and the CAMFED Association portal, to enhance visibility, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge sharing.
  • Populate CAMFED’s Salesforce database with relevant information while upholding CAMFED’s principle of accountability to the child
  • Represent CAMFED Malawi at relevant events
  • Write and present reports on communication related activities undertaken
  • Plan and facilitate communications training sessions for CAMFED staff and key stakeholders to strengthen capacity in effective messaging, media engagement, and brand aligned communication practices.
  • Monitor and document the effectiveness of CAMFED Malawi’s communication activities
  • Ensure both CAMFED, CAMA, and donors branding requirements are adhered to.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with media outlets to ensure consistent coverage of the organization’s activities, initiatives, and brand.
  • Plan, create, and oversee the production of high-quality communication materials, including press releases, newsletters, brochures, and digital content, ensuring alignment with the organization’s messaging and branding guidelines.
  • Organise meetings and forums to share CAMFED work including national and international commemorations.

Advocacy, Partnerships & Sustainability planning:

  • Develop an advocacy strategy for CAMFED Malawi
  • Lead the production of relevant high quality external policy, and advocacy materials including talking points, letters, briefing notes, position papers, press releases and advocacy reports
  • Provide support in the identification of any policy gaps, relevant policy actors and understanding policy dynamics in the country
  • Support program staff to generate evidence that would facilitate policy advocacy
  • Work with other policy advocacy actors to ensure harmonized advocacy efforts
  • Manage key partnerships with national and district stakeholders, implementing partners and key donors, in collaboration with the Executive Director, ensuring strategic leveraging in advancing CAMFED’s mission and Ministry of Education’s priorities.
  • Represent CAMFED in key national, regional, and global forums, positioning the organization’s frontline expertise to inform policy dialogues and communities of practice. Effectively articulate and promote lessons learned, models, and best practices for integration into national systems, in alignment with the Government of Malawi’s Agenda 2063 and CAMFED’s strategic objectives.
  • Support and engage Government on sustainability, unlocking education financing etc.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Person specification

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Social Sciences, or a related field; a Master’s degree will be considered an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications and advocacy, with at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Previous experience working with NGOs is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in graphic design, content development, reporting, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with local and international media outlets.
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa is required.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience working with the Government of Malawi, including familiarity with national development frameworks such as Agenda 2063, is an added advantage.
