VACANCIES – INTEGRATING MENTAL HEALTH INTO PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN LILONGWE ARCHDIOCESE
Background of the Organization.
St John of God Hospitaller Services [SJOG] is a faith based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994 to contribute to the development of Health for all by providing both residential and community based mental health promotion and care, maternal mental health and child & adolescent psychiatry programs. SJOG Malawi also delivers early intervention programs, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disabilities. It works in partnership with the Government of Malawi, partner organizations, the community and individual families, to provide quality mental health care and disability inclusion services which are accessible, sustainable and comprehensive. SJOG has program interventions in the areas of older persons; street connected children, psychosocial counselling support, addiction recovery and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG operates a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.
St John of God, with grant funding from the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) will be implementing a three-year Integrating mental health into primary health care system project in Lilongwe Archdiocese and seeks to recruit qualified candidates for the following position:
Mental Health Nurse (2 Positions – Lilongwe)
Reporting to the Team Leader, Responsible for assessing and treating maternal mental health conditions, delivering therapy and psychoeducation, facilitating referrals, building capacity of health staff and volunteers, coordinating with health facilities, and supporting community awareness and advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to);
- Conducts thorough mental health assessments of project beneficiaries with mental health problems
- Plans and deliver therapeutic treatment (including medication) of target groups with mental illnesses in the target communities (in cooperation with professionals from PHC facilities, district hospitals and mental health clinicians)
- Facilitate referral of patients where necessary
- Conducting individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy and crisis intervention
- Conducting psychoeducation to project beneficiaries with mental health/psychological challenges and their families
- Providing information on further treatment options (medical, psychological and social services in the community)
- Regular consultation/coordination with health facilities at PHC and district levels, and represent the project
- Capacity building of PHC staff
- Supporting information and awareness raising campaigns to destigmatize mental illness and advocacy work
Requirements
- Bachelor of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing from recognised and accredited institution.
- At least 2 years of experience working in both mental health and midwifery-related roles
- Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
