PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Buku Loyera is the contemporary Chichewa Bible, serving as a spiritual foundation for millions in Malawi and beyond. To deepen the understanding of God’s Word, The Bible Society of Malawi is undertaking a historic project to develop a comprehensive set of scholarly study notes for the Old Testament. This is against the background of finalising the New Testament Study notes some years back. We are therefore seeking passionate and highly qualified individuals to join this landmark initiative as Editors.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a resource that will shape biblical literacy and spiritual growth in the Chichewa-speaking world for generations to come.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Editor will play a critical role in shaping the final content of the Old Testament notes. Working closely with a team of theologians, translators, and reviewers, the Editor will be responsible for ensuring the notes are theologically sound, historically accurate, linguistically clear, and pastorally relevant for the Malawian context.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Content Editing: Meticulously edit drafted notes for theological accuracy, clarity, grammar, style, and consistency, ensuring faithfulness to the biblical text.
- Scholarly Verification: Fact-check historical, cultural, and linguistic details within and linguistic details within the notes, cross-referencing with academic sources.
- Language & Tone: Ensure the Chichewa used is of the highest standard-natural, clear, and relevant-and appropriate for a wide range of readers.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the review committee and contributing scholars, skillfully incorporating feedback and managing revisions.
- Consistency: Maintain a consistent style and voice across the entire Old Testament, adhering to the project’s established style guide.
- Project Timelines: Manage editorial workflows efficiently to meet project deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Required: A Master’s Degree or PhD in Theology, Biblical Studies, or a related field, with a strong specialization in the Old Testament.
- Required: Demonstrable expertise in Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament hermeneutics.
- Required: Exceptional command of both Chichewa and English, with proven experience in academic writing, translation, or professional editing.
- Required: Meticulous attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills.
- Desirable: Previous experience working on biblical commentaries, study Bibles, or similar theological publications.
- Desirable: A deep appreciation for the diversity of Christian traditions in Malawi and a commitment to ecumenical collaboration.
