Last Mile Health (LMH)
This role was posted on October 27, 2025. Please note that we will review applications on a rolling basis.
The Role
At Last Mile Health (LMH), we go as far as it takes for our patients. Do you have project implementation, as well as community engagement and awareness experience, to improve how women and newborns access timely life-saving care? If so, you may be the next Facilitator for the m-mama initiative in Malawi.
The m-mama initiative is an innovative and cost-effective at-scale Emergency Transportation System for pregnant women and newborns led by the Government of Malawi in partnership with Vodafone Foundation. Vodafone Foundation launched m-mama in 2013 in Tanzania in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania, and in Lesotho in 2021 in collaboration with the Government of Lesotho. This system addresses the high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality in rural areas by reducing delays in access to care using safe and timely emergency transportation for pregnant women and newborns experiencing an emergency. The central component of m-mama is a government led and owned emergency transport system enabled by innovative digital solutions to address complications as quickly and effectively as possible.
In 2025, Vodafone Foundation expanded m-mama to Malawi. In Malawi, Last Mile Health (LMH) will support the Government of Malawi and Vodafone Foundation to implement and scale the m-mama system across all 29 health districts, particularly for pregnant, postnatal women, and newborns in rural communities.
Reporting to the Regional Manager – m-mama, the m-mama Facilitator will support District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) in the implementation of the m-mama Emergency Transport System (EmTS) at the district level. The role assists in coordinating dispatch center operations, supporting community driver management, and promoting the integration of m-mama into district health systems.
The m-mama Facilitator works closely with government focal persons to build capacity, provide day-to-day implementation support, and foster district-level ownership of the initiative from the outset. The role also supports training, supervision, and performance monitoring, ensuring that district activities are conducted in line with m-mama standards, government priorities, and donor requirements to strengthen emergency referral systems and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
This funded position is located in the Central Region, Malawi and is open to Malawian nationals. This role will be hired on an 18-month fixed-term contract.
