Pharmacy Assistant

Position Overview:

The Pharmacy Assistant will support the Pharmacist in managing the supply and use of medicines across the hospital. This role includes dispensing medications to both walk-in and admitted patients, providing guidance on safe medication use, and ensuring prescriptions comply with all relevant laws and policies. The Pharmacy Assistant also plays a key role in patient counselling, customer service, and pharmacy operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dispense medications to both inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of the Pharmacist.
  • Verify that prescriptions are properly signed and authorised by a licensed prescriber.
  • Receive and enter prescription orders accurately into the system.
  • Prepare prescriptions, including counting pills, labelling, pricing, and compounding where necessary.
  • Monitor the dispensing process to ensure compliance with pharmacy regulations and internal policies.
  • Assist in managing inventory to ensure optimal stock levels of medications and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Counsel patients on proper medication use, including dosage, timing, and side effects.
  • Provide accurate and clear drug information and education to patients.
  • Assist in registering patients and attending to walk-ins.
  • Welcome patients and visitors, addressing inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Support community mobilization and health awareness activities as needed.
  • Help manage patient flow and waiting times in the pharmacy.
  • Address and resolve basic patient concerns or refer appropriately.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognized institution and registered with the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a busy hospital or clinical setting
  • Proven experience with Medical Inventory Management Systems
