CARE Malawi secured funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, locally titled ‘Tiwoloka’. The funding runs from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2029. CARE Malawi is implementing the project in partnership with the Forum for African Women Educationists in Malawi (FAWEMA) and Water Aid.
Therefore, CARE Malawi seeks to recruit well qualified persons to fill the following vacant positions within its USDA funded McGovern dole Food for Education program i.e. Tiwoloka Project in Malawi:
SENIOR COMMODITY ACCOUNTANT
Position Description
The Senior Commodity Accountant (SCA) plays a central role in managing the full lifecycle of commodity tracking, reconciliation, and reporting across six districts under the Tiwoloka school feeding program. This position ensures transparency, accuracy, and compliance with USDA and CARE standards, working closely with warehouses, district accountants, and program teams. The SCA also supports audits, capacity building, and stakeholder coordination to uphold high operational and reporting standards. The Senior Commodity Accountant for the Tiwoloka project, report to the Logistics and Commodity Specialist. He/She will be based at Tiwoloka program office at Lilongwe office.
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Maintain accurate manual and digital records of commodity movements, including receipts, distributions, and losses.
- Reconcile physical stock counts with school feeding records and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports including Commodity Status
- Analyze commodity usage patterns and conduct school- and district-level pipeline planning to inform distribution strategies.
- Prepare and facilitate the approval of Dispatch Authorizations, Dispatch Plans, transport request submission.
- Ensure adherence to USDA and CARE policies for commodity accounting and reporting.
- Support internal and external audits, implementing recommendations and maintaining secure documentation.
- Supervise district-level Commodity Accountants and conduct performance reviews.
- Provide training, mentoring, and field support to enhance staff understanding of compliance and reporting procedures.
- Collaborate with M&E, logistics, and distribution teams to ensure accurate data entry and reporting.
- Manage administrative tasks including travel coordination and invoice review related to commodity operations.
Required education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, logistics, or statistics or a related field, ideally accompanied by a recognized accounting qualification.
- 3 years of relevant experience for school feeding project or commodity management project. Preferably in an INGO setting and within US-funded food aid projects.
- Solid foundation in financial principles and reporting.
- Certification in Accounting, Auditing, or Statistics (preferred)
- Credibility and specialized knowledge in financial oversight and data analysis, reporting and reconciliation of tasks.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Experience with online database management for maintaining digital records and supporting donor commodity reporting.
- Experience in inventory and commodity tracking.
- Hands-on experience with physical stock counts, documentation verification, and pipeline planning.
- Familiarity with internal/external audit processes and data quality checks.
