Project Overview:
The Ireland-funded Malawi Growth Poles Project is a five-year project that will accelerate environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable, resilient, and more inclusive wealth generation in Malawi by mobilizing rural based private sector investments and partnerships with anchor firms and their surrounding communities, smallholder organizations, cooperatives, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) in a growth pole approach, with a youth and gender lens. In short, the Growth Poles Project is a partnership with private sector to drive resilient prosperity that will improve food security, incomes, jobs, and exports in Malawi.
Job Description:
The Driver will work within the Operations section of the Growth Poles Project. This section is responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day functioning of project logistics, transport, procurement, office management, and general administrative support. It plays a critical role in enabling effective implementation of project activities by providing timely and efficient operational services, including providing passenger vehicle driving services to the project, and other operations and logistics support as required. This position will report to the Operations Lead or her designee.
Success in this role is measured by:
- Safe and timely transportation of staff to engagements within Lilongwe and throughout the country
- Good care and maintenance of assigned vehicle(s)
- Compliance with project safety and transportation policies
- Operations support that enables the project to successfully deliver results
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Driving services:
- Provide passenger vehicle driving services to project staff and teams in accordance with trip requests and driving schedules set by the operations team
- Comply with all traffic laws and best practices for safety, and project policies
- Maintain vehicle logs
Vehicle maintenance:
- Keep vehicle adequately fueled and document fuel purchases and liquidation reports
- Facilitate vehicle maintenance and documentation, including certificate of fitness, insurance, registration, etc.
- Report vehicle maintenance issues in a timely manner
Operations support:
- Support facilities maintenance and asset management, including warehouse inspections
- Support project travel and office logistics and procurement as required
General Project Support:
- Participate in project weekly meetings, workshops, and events as required
- Provide general support for project activities as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience working as a driver, which should include experience working with donor-funded or international organizations, in both rural/off road and urban settings in various districts across Malawi
- Valid driver’s license, minimum class EB with Category P and defensive certificate certification required
- Good attitude, strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to keep neat and accurate trip, fuel use, and other logs and documentation
- Extensive knowledge of local community structures and processes
- Ability to work productively with communities and a range of stakeholders, and sensitivity to local cultures, norms, challenges, and priorities
- Skills with technology including GPS devices, filling out electronic surveys, and keeping notes and records in Microsoft Word, Excel or similar applications
- Position based in Lilongwe
- Fluency in English and Chichewa required, other local languages a plus
