IMPROVING MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEW MOTHERS IN LILONGWE AND MZIMBA DISTRICTS PROJECT
1. Background of the Organization.
St John of God Hospitaller Services [SJOG] is a faith based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994 to contribute to the development of Health for all by providing both residential and community based mental health promotion and care, maternal mental health and child & adolescent psychiatry programs. SJOG Malawi also delivers early intervention programs, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
It works in partnership with the Government of Malawi, partner organizations, the community and individual families, to provide quality mental health care and disability inclusion services which are accessible, sustainable and comprehensive. SJOG has program interventions in the areas of older persons; street connected children, psychosocial counselling support, addiction recovery and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG operates a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.
St John of God in preparation for a potential grant funding from KinderNotHilfe and BMZ of Germany seeks to recruit the following positions for its four-year Maternal Mental Health project in Lilongwe and Mzimba districts.
Mental Health Clinician (2 Positions -Lilongwe and Mzuzu)
Reporting to the Team Leader, Responsible for assessing and treating psychiatric conditions, providing therapy, training clinical staff, and ensuring compliance with mental health guidelines and quality standards.
Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to);
- Conduct patient interviews and physical/psychiatric examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and maintain comprehensive documentation.
- Diagnose a range of psychiatric and medical conditions of target groups/women with mental illnesses, prescribe appropriate treatments, and arrange for referrals or patient transfers when specialized care is needed ensuring compliance with quality standards and treatment guidelines (including the Mental Health Treatment Act, and SJOG guidelines)
- Deliver individual, family, and group therapy using diverse psychotherapeutic techniques.
- Training of district and PHC clinical staff in the areas of diagnosis and treatment following the World Health Organisations mental health Gap Action Programme ( mhGAP)
- Applying an evidence-based/scientific therapeutic approach while taking into account the spiritual and cultural needs of patients and their caregivers
- Capacity building of healthcare facility employees (coaching/ on-the-job training in maternal mental health)
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine (Mental Health) from a recognised and accredited institution.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in project coordination or a similar role in the NGO sector
- Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
