IMPROVING MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEW MOTHERS IN LILONGWE AND MZIMBA DISTRICTS PROJECT
1. Background of the Organization.
St John of God Hospitaller Services [SJOG] is a faith based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994 to contribute to the development of Health for all by providing both residential and community based mental health promotion and care, maternal mental health and child & adolescent psychiatry programs. SJOG Malawi also delivers early intervention programs, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
It works in partnership with the Government of Malawi, partner organizations, the community and individual families, to provide quality mental health care and disability inclusion services which are accessible, sustainable and comprehensive. SJOG has program interventions in the areas of older persons; street connected children, psychosocial counselling support, addiction recovery and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG operates a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.
St John of God in preparation for a potential grant funding from KinderNotHilfe and BMZ of Germany seeks to recruit the following positions for its four-year Maternal Mental Health project in Lilongwe and Mzimba districts.
Psychosocial Counsellor (2 Positions – Lilongwe and Mzuzu)
Reporting to the Team Leader, the Psychosocial Counsellor will be responsible for assessing mental health needs of pregnant and postpartum women, delivering therapy and psychoeducation, implementing treatments, supporting peer support groups, and contributing to awareness and advocacy efforts to reduce stigma.
Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to);
- Conducting thorough assessments of psychological and mental health needs of pregnant and postpartum women attending care in targeted district and PHC clinics
- Conducting individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy and crisis intervention
- Implementation of prescribed therapeutic treatments for women with mental health/psychological challenges (in cooperation with/under the supervision of mental health clinicians and professionals from PHC facilities and district hospitals)
- Conducting psychoeducation sessions
- Facilitating formation of peer support groups and providing continuous support and building their capacity on planning information and awareness-raising campaigns
- Supporting peer support groups’ information and awareness-raising campaigns to destigmatize mental illness and advocacy work
Requirements
- Diploma in Psychosocial Counselling from a recognised and accredited institution.
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a similar field.
- Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
