IMPROVING MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEW MOTHERS IN LILONGWE AND MZIMBA DISTRICTS PROJECT
1. Background of the Organization.
St John of God Hospitaller Services [SJOG] is a faith based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994 to contribute to the development of Health for all by providing both residential and community based mental health promotion and care, maternal mental health and child & adolescent psychiatry programs. SJOG Malawi also delivers early intervention programs, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
It works in partnership with the Government of Malawi, partner organizations, the community and individual families, to provide quality mental health care and disability inclusion services which are accessible, sustainable and comprehensive. SJOG has program interventions in the areas of older persons; street connected children, psychosocial counselling support, addiction recovery and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG operates a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.
St John of God in preparation for a potential grant funding from KinderNotHilfe and BMZ of Germany seeks to recruit the following positions for its four-year Maternal Mental Health project in Lilongwe and Mzimba districts.
Social Worker (2 Positions – Lilongwe and Mzuzu)
Reporting to the Team Leader, the Social Worker will be responsible for assessing psychosocial needs, supporting self-help and peer groups, providing follow-up care and referrals, strengthening staff capacity, and contributing to awareness, advocacy, and stakeholder collaboration in maternal mental health.
Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to);
- Conduct thorough assessment of psychosocial needs of pregnant and postpartum women in the project catchment area
- Conducting a social needs analysis of the project beneficiaries, developing management plans and implementing
- Supporting the development of women’s Self-Help Groups and peer support groups
- Conducting home visits and follow-up care for project beneficiaries
- Referral of project beneficiaries to appropriate Government and civil society programs
- Strengthening the social skills of nursing staff through coaching and training
- Supporting awareness-raising campaigns to promote the social and economic integration of mothers/pregnant women with mental health challenges
- Networking and cooperation with relevant stakeholders in the social sector, such as government social institutions and civil society and religious organizations
- Supporting advocacy work in the field of Maternal Mental Health
Requirements
- Bachelor of Social Work from a recognised and accredited institution.
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a similar field.
- Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
