IMPROVING MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEW MOTHERS IN LILONGWE AND MZIMBA DISTRICTS PROJECT

1. Background of the Organization.
St John of God Hospitaller Services [SJOG] is a faith based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994 to contribute to the development of Health for all by providing both residential and community based mental health promotion and care, maternal mental health and child & adolescent psychiatry programs. SJOG Malawi also delivers early intervention programs, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disabilities.

It works in partnership with the Government of Malawi, partner organizations, the community and individual families, to provide quality mental health care and disability inclusion services which are accessible, sustainable and comprehensive. SJOG has program interventions in the areas of older persons; street connected children, psychosocial counselling support, addiction recovery and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG operates a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.

St John of God in preparation for a potential grant funding from KinderNotHilfe and BMZ of Germany seeks to recruit the following positions for its four-year Maternal Mental Health project in Lilongwe and Mzimba districts.

Project Coordinator (1 Position- Lilongwe)

Reporting to Programs Manager, the Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating project implementation, managing MEAL systems, mobilizing target groups, overseeing data and reporting, engaging stakeholders, managing project resources, supporting evaluations, and driving process improvements to enhance project efficiency and impact.

Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to);

  • Overall planning and coordination of project implementation
  • Mobilization of target groups
  • Development of the Maternal Mental Health Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) system and monitoring plan based on the impact matrix indicators
  • Preparation and control of activity planning, Data collection and progress measurement
  • Manage Reports and Database for Project Beneficiaries
  • Building and maintaining relationships with target groups, local administration and relevant authorities and other project stakeholders
  • Facilitate Collaboration and Networking within and outside the organization
  • Manage resources, including personnel (Lilongwe and Mzuzu Project staff and volunteers) and materials allocated to the project, per Service Policies and procedures.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance project efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support baseline, midline, and endline evaluations.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Mental Health- Psychiatric Nursing, Mental Health, Reproductive/ Public Health or related field.
  • Those with a related bachelor’s degree and with considerable relevant experience will also be considered
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in project coordination or a similar role in the NGO sector
  • Those with experience in managing international donor funded projects will have added advantage
