POSITIONS: ACCOUNTANT (1)

Background

The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) is an alliance of 84 diverse independent and voluntary organizations including nongovernmental organizations, community-based organizations, trade unions, and faith-based organizations that promote quality education in Malawi. CSEC complements government efforts in piloting innovations, coordinating non-state actors, shaping policy discourse, lobbying for increased budget allocation, and tracking the utilization of resources committed to the education sector.

It is fully registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act (CAP 5:03), and is a member of both the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi and the Non-Governmental Organization Board of Malawi.

CSEC is currently inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position based at its Secretariat in Lilongwe.

Accountant

Contract Type: Three-year contract, renewable subject to continued need of the position and availability of funds.

Reporting to: Finance and Administration Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Process payment requests and ensure compliance with financial policies.
  • Maintain proper accounting records and audit-ready documentation.
  • Manage all accounting transactions, budget implementation, and control.
  • Code and post transactions; maintain cashbook and prepare bank reconciliations.
  • Monitor internal controls and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Prepare final accounts and coordinate year-end audits.
  • Administer payroll and remit PAYE, pensions, and WHT to relevant authorities.
  • Track implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Assist in preparing quarterly financial and management accounts and project reports.
  • Manage filing systems for financial records and coordinate timely cash liquidations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Must be a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM).
  • At least 5 years’ experience in financial accounting, including 3 years in a similar role within an NGO or donor-funded environment.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, especially Online QuickBooks, is essential.
  • Strong multitasking and time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • High level of integrity and adherence to systems and procedures.
