The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research, extension and training services. Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources.

An opportunity has arisen for highly motivated professionals with requisite academic qualifications and technical expertise to fill vacant positions as follows:

Financial Accountant – Kasungu (Mwimba)

Purpose of the position

The successful candidate will be responsible for economic analysis and the production of all financial accounting reports

Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent will among other duties perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare and examine financial records, assuring information is up to date and accurate.
  • Analyze, reconcile, balance, and maintain accounting records to develop special financial reports.
  • Monitor revenue and expense to ensure that expenditure control follows proper and applicable accounting procedures.
  • Coordinate the preparation of regularly scheduled and special billings, cost reports, analyses, inventories, and preliminary financial statements for funding sources.
  • Review and approve expenditure and procurement documents for availability of funding, completeness and accuracy of documents, and compliance with approved accounting policies.
  • Provide assistance to departments and individuals in interpreting reports, accounting procedures, controls and in resolving associated problems.
  • Ensure that farm operations are conducted efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Manage Accounts receivables and accounts payables.
  • Keep a daily back up of accounting data
  • Supervise the work of the Finance and Accounts Section staff by ensuring that they complete tasks assigned to them on time.
  • Coordinate preparation of the annual budget.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Accountancy Degree from a recognized University.
  • Must be a member of ICAM.
  • Five years’ practical work experience in a busy accounting office
