About Saint John of God
St John of God Hospitaller Services Malawi [SJOG] is faith-based charitable organization established in Malawi in 1994. Our mission is to contribute to the development of health for all by providing community based mental health promotion and care and services for children with intellectual disabilities. We provide residential care services for persons with mental health challenges in both Mzuzu and Lilongwe cities; primary health care outreach program for persons with mental health challenges including child and adolescent psychiatry program and maternal mental health services.
Related programs include rehabilitation and vocational training for persons recuperating from mental illness, vulnerable youths, those with other disabilities and special needs; community-based rehabilitation for children with disability and epilepsy; early child development services for children with both physical and intellectual disabilities and those operating in and on the streets of Mzuzu City. In addition, SJOG delivers interventions for older persons; psychosocial counselling, addiction recovery program and self-help group approach for women empowerment. SJOG has a University of Health Sciences offering tertiary level training for psychiatric nurses, psychiatric clinicians, psychosocial counsellors and general nurses.
About the Role

Board members play a hugely important role in Saint John of God. They guide the organization in its mission and objectives, setting strategy and making sure we are having a positive impact. They are responsible for governance, overseeing good financial management, ensuring Saint John of God Hospitaller Services is a good employer, and protecting our reputation.
We are looking for people who care about our mission, values and come with an engaged and committed mindset, ready to have their voice heard in conversations about what we do and why. We hope to increase the diversity of our Board and balance experience and enthusiasm across our board of directors.
Requirements and Competencies
Expressions of interest are now being sought from individuals with expertise, experience or lived experience in one or more of these areas;
- Health and social care, as well as the disability sector, work with reputable institutions.
- Service Delivery/Development, Clinical, Strategic Planning, Safeguarding and Risk Management
- International development work with medium to large-scale charitable organizations or faith-based charities.
- Finance, Charity accounting and audit – either as a qualified accountant working in a medium to large charity at a senior level, or an audit manager/partner specialising in the charity sector.
- Legal, Governance, ICT, Human Resource Management and a Company Secretary role with a reputable institution
- Fundraising, Resource mobilization, Partnership, Advocacy and Communication at both local and international levels.
Remuneration
As a registered charity, our board members are volunteers; however, a modest seating allowance is provided, travel and other expenses are fully reimbursed.
Board Meetings
A total annual commitment attendance of 8 meetings, quarterly for the full board and sub-committee meetings
The meetings will take place either in Lilongwe or Mzuzu with hybrid options for meetings available.
