Kamuzu Academy is a selective, co-educational boarding school for students aged 11 to 18 years. The school consistently matches or exceeds local and international averages at IGCSE and GCE A levels. Kamuzu Academy is one of the few schools in the world that continue to offer classical languages such as Greek and Latin besides English, French and Chinese. The Academy occupies a large, purpose-built campus, with outstanding academic, recreational and sporting facilities in a stunning environment about 2 hours north of Malawi’s capital city Lilongwe. Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Head of Boarding to lead and manage our boarding provision. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of pastoral care, safeguarding, and wellbeing for our boarding students. They will be responsible for maintaining a positive, inclusive, and structured boarding environment, ensuring compliance with all relevant safeguarding regulations and national boarding standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and daily oversight of the boarding provision, fostering a safe, welcoming, and disciplined environment.
  • Oversee the pastoral care, safeguarding, and wellbeing of all boarders, ensuring their personal, social, and academic development.
  • Ensure full compliance with National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools and all relevant safeguarding legislation.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the boarding team, ensuring high standards of professional practice and student care.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to boarding life, ensuring best practice and a consistent approach.
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents, guardians, and Academy staff, acting as the primary point of contact for boarding matters.
  • Promote a culture of inclusivity, respect, and personal responsibility within the boarding community.
  • Organise and oversee enrichment activities, fostering a sense of community and engagement among boarders.
  • Manage boarding facilities, ensuring they meet health, safety, and wellbeing standards.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A strong background in pastoral care, safeguarding, and student wellbeing within a boarding school environment.
  • A thorough understanding of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools, safeguarding regulations, and boarding best practices.
  • Experience managing a team and fostering a supportive, student-centred environment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • A commitment to upholding and promoting the values and ethos of the school
  • A flexible, proactive, and compassionate approach to working with young people.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Head of Boarding or senior pastoral leadership role in a boarding school.
  • A recognised safeguarding qualification or pastoral care certification.
  • A degree in education, psychology, or a related field.
