
Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP)
Background
Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP) is a Trustee Organization whose mandate is to provide free medical rehabilitation services to Malawians. This is done through provision of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and nursing services. These services are supplemented by provision of assistive devices which are given to the clients.
MAP services are offered through settings in outreach services offered through four regional offices in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Rumphi. These regional offices have a workshop each which fabricate and supply different types of assistive devices as required by the clients. MAP also runs the institutional rehabilitation setting at the Kachere rehabilitation Centre which is in Blantyre. This is a 60-bed facility which admits clients from all over the country with various types of disabilities. MAP also trains Rehabilitation Technicians for its own human resource sustainability as well as for the sector.
Malawi Against Physical Disabilities gets its staff salaries from government which also provides subvention for the operations of Kachere Rehabilitation Centre.
With funding from the Treasury, MAP seeks the services of a suitably qualified and experienced person to serve as the General Manager tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre.
The position
This position will be on contract for three years but renewable based on performance. The candidate will be given benefits for each completed term of contract. Salary will be as provided on the MAP scale structure as approved by government.
Qualifications and experience
The proficient General Manager will have the following qualifications and experience:
- The person should have a minimum of Master’s degree in Business Management, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy or in any related field from a recognized institution.
- Should have served in senior management position in a busy setting for not less than 10 years but 5 years of which is in a senior executive position. Those with management experience in a rehabilitation or similar setting that handles both government and donor funds will have an added advantage.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey the organization’s vision, objectives and performance to stakeholders, employees, customers, and the stakeholders, employees, customers, and the public.
- Strong financial acumen to understand and manage the organization’s financial performance and ensure its financial stability and growth.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with partners, stakeholders, and other industry players to expand the organization’s network and opportunities.
- Highly developed problem-solving skills to address various challenges that may arise in the course of running the organization.
- Understanding of legal and regulatory guidelines within which the organization operates.
- Strong ethics and understanding of corporate governance practices to guide the organization in maintaining its reputation and integrity.
- Strong decision-making skills to guide the company in navigating complex and high-stakes situations.
Duties and responsibilities
Reporting to the Chairperson of the Board the successful candidate will be expected to perform beyond the following roles:
- Plan, develop, implement and direct the organization’s operational and fiscal function and performance.
- Collaborating with senior officers to drive growth, enhance sustainability, and fortify the organization’s position.
- Work with the finance team to develop a solid cash flow projection and reporting mechanism, which includes setting a minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
- Provide strategic input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the organization, specifically evaluating potential mergers, acquisitions, or partnerships.
- Act as a strategic partner by developing and implementing the company’s plans and programs.
- Provide accurate analysis of financial trends and budgets through management reports to help the Board of Trustees as well as the senior executives to increase credibility and authority.
- Implement, improve, and enforce policies and procedures that will increase the financial and operational effectiveness of the organization.
- Communicate effectively and establish credibility throughout the organization and with the Board of Trustees as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
- Organize quarterly Board of Trustees meetings as forum for reports and policy discussions
- Setting departmental goals in collaboration with heads of departments to ensure overall quality.
- Monitor the performance of the organization and detect any successes or risks and plan appropriate actions for sustainability
- Engaging with shareholders, the public, and government entities.
