COMMUNITY EDUCATOR

Job Summary
A Community Educator at UNC Project assesses individual and community needs for health education, plans effective recruitment and retention programs. S/he is also responsible for implementation of sensitization programs and evaluation of effectiveness of the health education programs.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

Assess individual and community needs for health education

  • Obtain data about social and cultural environments, growth and development factors, needs and interests.
  • Distinguish between behaviors that foster, and those that hinder, recruitment and retention
  • Infer needs for the sensitization on the basis of obtained data.

Plan effective recruitment and retention programs.

  • Develop recruitment and retention plans with input from the CAB and study teams
  • Formulate appropriate and measurable program objectives
  • Design sensitization programs consistent with specified program objective
  • Working with CAB to identify community education needs for specific study

Implement sensitization programs

  • Exhibit competences in carrying out planned sensitization programs
  • Infer enabling objectives as needed to implement sensitization programs in specified settings
  • Select methods and media best suited to implement program plans for specific learners
  • Monitor educational programs, adjusting objectives and activities as necessary

Evaluate effectiveness of health education programs

  • Develop plans to assess achievement of programs objectives
  • Carry out evaluation plans
  • Interpret results of program evaluation
  • Infer implication from findings for future program planning
  • Resolve complaints timely and seek assistance where necessary
  • Work with the CAB to reach areas where rumors originate
  • Work with chiefs to plan for meetings

General

  • Ensure collection of accurate and legible data
  • Ensure that subjects are given detailed information about the study before commencement of any study procedures,
  • Endeavor to understand subjects’ views/problems
  • Participate in dispelling misconceptions about the study in the community through the Community Advisory Board (CAB)
  • Perform any other duties assigned

Education and Personal Development

  • Take own initiative in learning basic computer skills
  • Take responsibility for own personal and professional development through advice from superiors and colleagues
  • Participate in orientation of new research personnel
  • Ensure personal and professional development by undertaking short/long term course.

Qualifications and Experience
• Malawi School Certificate of Education, Plus
• Diploma in Community Development
• From none to 4 years’ experience
