NBS Bank Plc invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill a vacant post named below, tenable in Credit department at the Bank’s Head office in Blantyre.


Purpose of the Post

Reporting to the Head of Credit, the position holder will be responsible for evaluating and recommending and/or approving credit related transactions in line with the delegated credit authorities to maintain a good and profitable balance between returns and risks across the bank’s lending portfolio. This is a senior management role and requires a seasoned and mature credit professional.

Summary of Key Responsibilities.

  • Takes a lead in budgeting processes to acquire funds for credit origination and underwriting operations.
  • Develops and Communicates credit policies and procedures in a manner understandable to the service delivery teams.
  • Identifies and manages staff in Credit space ensuring optimal retention and productivity.
  • Researches on key market developments and develop mitigants to minimize potential losses.
  • Drives the continuous improvement of internal credit guidelines and
  • Takes a lead in administering credit policies and procedures and makes recommendations for review.
  • Develops and executes Credit origination and Underwriting action plans.
  • Analyses business growth, development and performance (innovation, regulatory changes, customer and risk and compliance requirements) and takes corrective action.
  • Escalates adverse exposure of credit portfolios to internal stakeholders for action based on review of credit portfolios.
  • Coordinates and oversees that the post implementation of facilities and legal documentation in accordance with the approval conditions.
  • Coordinates Credit Risk governance meetings.
  • Oversees compliance with statutory, regulatory and supervisory requirements (Prudential limits)
  • Oversees workouts of NPL accounts and modifications of watch-listed and standard accounts
  • Ensures, through the Line Managers, the enablement, and implementation of the requisite Company Risk, Compliance and SHE policies and processes and the maintenance of good Corporate Governance.
  • Builds and manages relations with credit insurance providers.
  • Leads a team of direct reports, project personnel and stakeholders in the development and implementation of a series of specific initiatives to transform the end-to-end credit process.


Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Banking, Finance, Business Management or any related field from a recognized tertiary institution.

Experience and Personal Skills

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in credit management, banking, finance or similar environment.
  • Must have experience of at least four (4) at management level.
  • Specialized technical problem solving and ingenuity.
  • Demonstration of the values of integrity, quality and caution.
  • Should engender trust, demonstrate a sense of urgency and ensure consistent achievement of quality standards.
