Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology (Kusamala) is a local, non-governmental organization that promotes household-level permaculture and agro ecology systems in Malawi. Through grants and programs, Kusamala conducts outreach, research, and advocacy with the aim to show the viability of permaculture as a local and national agricultural strategy. In a country where approximately 80% of the population are subsistence farmers, Kusamala demonstrates how local resources can meet human needs while improving quality of life both for people and the environment. Kusamala is implementing Better livelihood through sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation Project and Nutrition Smart Community project which arefunded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) and implemented in partnership with Welthungerhilfe.

The projects are being implemented in Mangochi district.

We are currently seeking for a suitable Candidate to fill the following position.

Job Title: Monitoring Evaluation and Learning Officer

Job Description

The MEAL Officer will be responsible for knowledge management, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and reporting.

The position will be based at Kusamala’s head office in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Specific tasks 

  • Develop an M&E plan, ensuring alignment with Results matrix and log frame
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate and report on monitoring, evaluation and learning activities.
  • Design, administer, collate, and analyze results for all data gathered
  • Develop and put in place tracking documentation for project activities, ensuring all verification documents e.g., attendance registers, reports, photographs etc. are promptly uploaded
  • Compile monthly and quarterly monitoring report including updating the results framework.
  • Compile annual and project end reports.
  • Liaise weekly with the project and fieldteam to review progress against the Results Matrix.
  • Support complaints response mechanism process
  • Support the work of field staff, providing guidance and technical assistance in terms of monitoring, evaluation and learning
  • Promote participatory planning and monitoring; organize and refresh monitoring and evaluation training for project staff in the field

Required skills and experience  

  • Proven experience in monitoring progress and learning processes by keeping track of project outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize appropriate M&E tools and packages
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills including a demonstrated ability to perform data analysis and make recommendations based on findings, and convey data in an accessible and easy to understand way.

The ideal candidate;

  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in a related field i.e., Sustainable Development, Social Development, Agriculture, Anthropology, Sociology, Environmental Sciences, Climate Change etc.;
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of experience working with monitoring and evaluation systems, ensuring data quality, and managing data intensive, performance-based programs funded by international donors; Must have a valid driving license

Preferred skills and experience

  • Familiarity with Permaculture/Agroecology
  • Experience and/or knowledge of information systems and monitoring and evaluation processes as they relate to data collection for result-based monitoring (RBM) and reporting
  • Experience in working in the field of agriculture/ Forestry
  • Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills in English
  • Proven ability to work under pressure with multiple concurrent demands
  • Dynamic and adaptable
  • Willing and flexible to travel if necessary.
