The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) is a statutory organization established by the Water Resources Act of 2013 with a specific function to regulate and manage water resources.

Furthermore, the NWRA seeks to ensure the sustainable use of water resources and address the water resources planning, development, and management challenges. In its effort to sustainably manage water resources, the NWRA seeks to recruit members of staff. In this regard, NWRA invites applications from suitably, qualified, and experienced persons to fill the following vacant position:

Job Title: Kamuzu Barrage Manager

Department: Water Resource Management and Development

Reporting: Executive Director

Purpose of the Job

To manage and coordinate programs and activities for the effective operations of the Kamuzu Barrage.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Facilitating the preparation of budgets, work plans, work schedules for the barrage unit
  2. Execute day-to-day operation of the Kamuzu Barrage, including gate operations according to applicable operational strategies and rules.
  3. Ensure the Kamuzu Barrage Operation Model is operational and continuously updated.
  4. Oversee the maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment related to the Barrage, its systems and structures. Also, maintain and test as required the back-up power supply (diesel generators).
  5. Implement the Maintenance Plan, including dam safety inspections and safety training.
  6. Conduct inspections and testing to uncover errors and defects (Document the condition of all relevant systems.
  7. Facilitate the daily operation of the weed collection boom, landing system, and trucks, including processing and/or transport and disposal of the aquatic weeds.
  8. Facilitate the maintenance of the weed-boom, crane, trucks and other mechanical equipment and buildings.
  9. Management of stocks and spares.
  10. Oversee and safeguarding the Unit’s enforcement of its health, safety and environment (HSE) obligation.
  11. Undertake planned staff training in Barrage operation and maintenance, including HSE to safeguard operation.
  12. Maintain timely transmission of hydrological raw data from stations 1B1,1B7 and 1B8 as well as actual data from operation to the Unit database and the National Hydrological database at NWRA Headquarters.
  13. Collect daily information on water demands in the Shire River Basin downstream of Kamuzu Barrage and upstream.
  14. Prepare project proposals related to the functions of the barrage.
  15. Ensure the gauge stations around the barrage are functional.
  16. Maintain the good NWRA image in the surrounding community of the Machinga and Balaka Districts.
  17. On daily basis working under the Director of Water Resources Management and Development on all the hydrological management, flood management and aquatic weed management of the barrage.

Minimum Qualifications and Work Experience

  • Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering/Management, Hydraulics or any related field with first degree in engineering related to Electro-mechanical, dams or civil engineering.
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience combined with demonstrated progressive management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of current dam/barrage civil, mechanical, or electrical technologies and multi-purpose management principles
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and experience with management of adherence.
  • Marine experience would be an added advantage.
