EGPAF has worked in Malawi since 2001. Today, EGPAF Malawi implements evidence-based HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions in 177 health facilities in nine districts through EGPAF’s U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief/U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (PEPFAR/CDC) – funded Achieving HIV Epidemic Control through Scaling Up Quality Testing, Care and Treatment in Malawi.

EGPAF in Collaboration with Lighthouse Malawi as well as Right to Care will be implementing a research study called “Validation of an HIV Testing Eligibility Screening Tool to Identify Adults Living with HIV in Malawi’’. The study will take place in 24 public health facilities in EGPAF and Lighthouse Trust supported scale up districts of Chiradzulu, Blantyre, Zomba, Thyolo, Lilongwe and Mzimba. The study will be implemented for about two months in all the study districts.

EGPAF seeks to fill the following open temporary position for this project:

Position        : HIV Diagnostic Assistants – HDAs (17)

Location       : Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba, Thyolo, Mzimba and Chiradzulu Districts

Reporting to: Public Health Evaluation & Research Coordinator

How will you fight for an AIDS-free generation?

The HIV Diagnostic Assistants will be responsible for promoting and conducting HIV ascertainment, screening services and testing services at the study clinic as well as carrying out study related duties assigned from time to time by the line manager.

No two days are alike at EGPAF, but what can you expect in this role?

  • Attend study training and should be well versed with the protocol, study procedures and applicable EGPAF policies and procedures
  • Screening for eligibility and enroll study participants
  • Capture data from study participants using tablets or paper-based questionnaires
  • Complete study documentation, in accordance with study protocol and EGPAF policies and procedures
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of information and data collected
  • Provide daily recruitment updates or challenges to the Research Assistants
  • Perform rapid HIV tests to all patients at the study clinic
  • Collect Dried Blood Spots (DBS) samples for early infant diagnosis, viral load monitoring and quality assurance testing
  • Ensure test results are recorded or updated in appropriate MoH and partner registers
  • Adhere to nationally approved clinical guidelines, protocols and evidence-based practices when discharging duties
  • Ensure infection prevention procedures are observed as per infection control protocol
  • Link all HIV positive and negative clients to appropriate services and treatment as per protocol and clinical guidelines
  • Ensure availability of all necessary study as well as clinical supplies
  • Any other clinical and research related duties as required at the study clinic

To be successful, you will need to have:

  • Malawi School Leaving Certificate (M.S.C.E) or its equivalent
  • Qualification in Health Sciences or Social Sciences will be an added advantage
  • Certificate in HIV Testing and Counselling
  • Trained in new Integrated 3 Test Algorithm
  • Three years’ experience of implementing HIV testing service, in particular knowledge of PITC eligibility saturation services using MOH screening and ascertainment tools
  • Experience using tablets including ODK software or other electronic data collection software
  • Prior research or data entry experience is an added advantage
