1. Background

Self Help Africa (SHA) Malawi is an international non-governmental organization working to create opportunities for lasting improvement in peoples’ lives. We work in partnership with others to support a range of livelihoods and food security, WASH and health, sustainable energy and gender equality Programmes reaching over 1,000,000 people a year across Malawi. Globally, we work in nine countries across Africa, Asia and South America. SHA currently operates in 14districts in Malawi, supporting 23 on-going projects. In Malawi, our long-term vision is sustainable livelihoods and healthy lives for all in a changing climate. Our mission is to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality, and the impact of climate change through community-led, market-based, and enterprise-focused approaches, so that people have access to nutritious food, clean water, decent employment, and incomes, while sustaining natural resources. We want to see all people in Malawi determining their own lives, supported by strong and accountable government services, and effective local markets and value chains.

2. Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of this consultancy is to develop a Disability Inclusion Guide that provides actionable, context specific guidance on how to effectively integrate disability inclusion in project planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation in all Self help Africa Programs in Malawi.

3. Objectives

  • Review existing disability audit findings and recommendations available within the organization.
  • Develop a user-friendly, context-relevant Disability Inclusion Guide to be used by managers and project staff.
  • Ensure alignment with national policies, global best practices (e.g., UNCRPD), and donor standards on disability inclusion.
  • Facilitate a validation workshop to review and refine the draft guide with key stakeholders.

4. Scope of Work

The consultant will be expected to:

  • Review existing disability audit findings and recommendations available within the organization.
  • Draft the Disability Inclusion Guide covering key areas such as inclusive communication, accessible programming, disability-sensitive budgeting, and safeguarding.
  • Incorporate practical tools, checklists, and case examples.
  • Present the draft in a validation workshop and integrate feedback.
  • Finalize the guide and deliver in both print-ready and editable digital formats.

5. Deliverables

  • Inception report outlining methodology and work plan.
  • Draft Disability Inclusion Guide.
  • Facilitate a validation workshop with internal staff.
  • Final Disability Inclusion Guide (editable Word version and print-ready PDF).
  • Brief presentation deck summarizing key content and application of the guide.

6.     Qualifications and desired expertise

  • Advanced degree in Social Work, Disability Studies, Gender, International Development, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in disability inclusion programming, training, or guideline development.
  • Strong knowledge of inclusive development principles, national disability frameworks, and participatory approaches.
  • Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, or development partners.
  • Excellent writing and facilitation skills.

7. Timeframe

The consultancy is expected to be completed within 30 working days starting from Mid-July, 2025.

 8. Administration and logistical arrangements

The consultant will report to the Deputy country director – Programs and will work closely with the Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Manager. The Consultant will be responsible for all logistic arrangements for him/herself and or members of their team.

9.     Confidentiality and property rights

SHA shall have exclusive rights over all information pertaining to this assignment. Except for purposes of this assignment, the information shall not be disclosed to the public nor used in whatever form without written permission of SHA

10.  Compliance with SHA Safeguarding policies

  • Have a good understanding of safeguarding issues and be willing to undergo a safeguarding orientation.
  • Read and understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and be willing to sign a declaration form and code of conduct to ensure they comply with all measures to reduce risk.
  • All field work and interaction with project participants will include a briefing on feedback mechanisms.
  • All field work schedules will be assessed for risk by SHA and will follow SHA restrictions in order to mitigate any risks to project participants.

  • Curriculum Vitae highlighting qualification and experience in a similar assignment.

  • Financial proposal indicating consultancy fee and a breakdown of expenses related to the assignment in local currency (Malawi Kwacha).
