Amref Health Africa in Malawi is implementing Delivering Innovation in Self Care (DISC) project (DISC

MW-Amref), a CIFF funded multi-year Family planning project focusing on increasing uptake of Depo-Provera self-injectable in Chitipa, Karonga, Kasungu, Salima and Nkhotakota districts. The project goal is to achieve 35% increase in uptake of Depo-Provera Self-Injection in MOMENTUM Tikweze Umoyo Districts by 2026. Amref Health Africa in Malawi is therefore inviting suitably qualified applicants for the following position;

Family Planning Technical Advisor-DISC (FP TA-DISC)

The position holder will be based at the Head Office in Lilongwe and report to the Technical Lead-MNCH/FP/RH.

Main Purpose of the Job:

To provide technical and managerial oversight in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of maternal neonatal and child health activities implemented under DISC project layered on USAID MOMENTUM Tikweze Umoyo Project. The post holder will provide leadership, guidance, mentorship and support in integration, coordination and collaboration among stakeholders in the FP/RH sectors.

Specific Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide managerial guidance and technical leadership in the implementation of DISC activities across the five project implementation districts.
  • Effectively plan, execute and evaluate the implementation of activities and critically reflect and improve on project strategies to promote quality service delivery.
  • Coordinate and represent Amref in stakeholders’ meetings and technical working groups on FP/RH programs.
  • Provide leadership in development of quarterly reports and presentations for sharing with donor and other stakeholder’s resources.
  • Build capacity of MOH to promote the development of health workers and management of staff capacity in the above areas through a broad range of approaches such as curriculum development and training, one-on-one mentorship and on-the-job training, supportive supervision, on-site and off-site training coordination etc.
  • Build capacity of service delivery technical officers to institute mentorship and coaching at all levels on maternal, newborn and child health program.
  • Build capacity of project technical teams on documentation of success stories and concept notes.
  • Work closely with other project staff to ensure that maternal newborn and child health strategies and approaches are delivered in a coherent and coordinated way, in line with log frame targets, and
  • Support national and district teams to identify synergies and lead in the development and implementation of integrated work plans to ensure efficient and effective delivery of services.
  • Review indicators for monitoring maternal newborn and child health activities for the DISC and coordinate supervision and mentoring of service providers both at national and district levels
  • Liaise with various Government departments, NGOs and donor partners to spearhead coordination and collaboration at all levels for the benefit of the recipients of services at grassroots level
  • Coordinate national and district level joint learning, reflection and planning platforms and participate in relevant technical working group meetings
  • In conjunction with Monitoring and Evaluation team, document and disseminate best practices and lessons learnt in FP/RH activities
  • Lead in identification of capacity gaps for the consortium members and various national and district level key stakeholders’ and project participants and develop strategies to address the identified gaps
  • Collect and apply innovative capacity building tools and techniques for the consortium members and recipients of services at national and district level
  • Contribute significantly to consortium level coordination and collaboration meetings including the quarterly review meetings both at national and district levels

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Midwifery or public health, or any other related discipline in health with relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with at least 3 years directly in coordination, management and monitoring of maternal newborn and child health programs.
  • Substantial experience implementing integrated health programs
  • Proficient in IT Skills e.g. MSOffice.

  • Well versed with project management and development;
  • Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines;
  • Ability for analytical and strategic thinking;
  • A proactive, participatory and result oriented approach to work.
  • Prior experience working in research related projects
