Job Summary:       

The Communication Officer is responsible for shaping and maintaining Habitat for Humanity Malawi’s public image and brand reputation. He/She will implement communication plans and initiatives aligned with organizational goals, covering both corporate and programming communication activities to achieve HFHM’s targets. The role aims to enhance the organization’s influence, visibility, and public engagement in Malawi through compelling storytelling that inspires action and support from diverse audiences, including communities, staff, partners, government entities, donors, and supporters.

Resource Development, Partnerships and Sustainability Manager
Main Responsibilities
  1. Gather and Produce Communication Materials:
  • Collect and organize communications materials from programs work, and other HFHM initiatives including human interest stories, blogs, photos, videos, and sound bites.
  • Distil project insights and develop materials such as articles, newsletters, and annual reports to increase project visibility and share results.

2. Media Relations and Training:

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with national and local media contacts within operational areas.
  • Maintain a database of media organizations and their contacts.
  • Assist in organizing and managing press conferences, media coverage and responding to incoming media calls Provide input for speeches, news releases, fact sheets, newsletters and any other presentations or reports as required.
  1. Branding and Marketing
  • Development of a communications calendar capturing priority actions, events, and products for the National Office.
  • Ensure all HFHM investments and communication products and project deliverables for external audience are appropriately branded.

4. Documentation and Compliance:

  • Establish and maintain processes for storing and archiving all communication materials in written, audio, and visual formats.
  • Ensure all documentation and communications adhere to organizational guidelines for messaging, images, and media use.

5. Reporting, Safeguarding and Compliance:

  • Prepare regular progress reports on communication outputs and their impact on organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with the organization’s Code of Conduct and consent rules regarding participant dignity and content usage.
Educational Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in media, Communication, Journalism, Digital Media or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or a related field, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • 3 – 4 years of experience in media and communication, such as producing written and audio-visual content, and graphic design/publication design.
Experience Required
  • Demonstrated experience with digital photography and videography for corporate/non-governmental communications, journalism, media, visual marketing, social media, commercial film, or advertising.
  • Ability to work in a team and to sometimes meet tight deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English.
  • Experience of managing digital and social media pages of a humanitarian organization and analyzing and reporting on indicators of impact.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and other relevant communication tools.
