Through World Bicycle Relief’s 501(c)3, we provide transport solutions to those who cannot afford them, and through Buffalo Bicycle Limited, we sell the rugged Buffalo Bicycle and spare parts. Buffalo Bicycle Limited also offers users repair and maintenance services via a retail network of shops and local mechanics. WBR has distributed over 870,000 fit-for-purpose bicycles and trained 2,700+ community-based mechanics. Girls with Buffalo Bicycles are 19% less likely to drop out of school; dairy farmers earn 23% more income; and health workers reach 88% more patients.

Purpose of the Job

To oversee the finance function and ensure that all financial information is complete, accurate and timely and reflects the company’s financial position.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains the Malawi Finance Manual
  • Compiles and analyses financial information
  • Accurately prepares, reviews and submits monthly financial reports to management
  • Monitor compliance with accounting principles and company procedures
  • Prepares and analyses annual and monthly budget performance
  • Oversees the fiscal year budgeting process
  • Monitors implementation of budgets and provides advice and guidance to management on budget implementation.
  • Liaises with external auditors and prepares schedules for audit purposes.
  • Develops, maintains and monitors internal controls.
  • Reviews Payroll
  • Responsible for all local tax obligations
  • Monthly Inventory Reconciliation
  • Monitoring of Stock levels
  • Bank reconciliation
  • Posting payments and receipts including the monthly close for Buffalo Bicycles Malawi
  • Posting intercompany transactions

Skills and Personal Attributes

  • Attention to detail
  • Good command of Microsoft Office, Sage Evolution and Payroll
  • Proven financial accounting and management track record
  • Effective communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and negotiation skills.

Knowledge Required

  • A clear understanding of operational policies and procedures
  • A clear understanding of operational plans and budgets
  • Knowledge of reporting procedures
  • A clear understanding of statutory requirements with regard to finance.

Qualifications and Experience

  • CPA, ACCA or other equivalent designation
  • Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)
  • Must have progressive wholesale and retail accounting experience
  • Experience with a retail Point of Sale operating system an advantage
  • 5 years post-qualification experience

Mental Demands/Judgement and Initiative

  • Reconciling expenditure schedules
  • Preparing accurate and timely management reports
  • Providing guidance to management on all finance related matters

Communication

  • Prepares and submits written operational and financial reports
  • Directs, prepares and monitors the implementation of budgets.
