
Centenary Bank
Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Company Secretary & Head of Legal Services, the incumbent will provide legal advice to management and staff at the Bank, offer legal representation to the Bank, and review legal documentation prepared by the Bank or arising from the Bank’s business operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Drafting and Reviewing Legal Documents
- Drafting, reviewing, and perfecting security documents.
- Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts to ensure that the Bank’s interests are legally and adequately protected.
- Reviewing, vetting, interpreting, and socializing legal documents and instruments to ensure awareness,
adherence, and mitigation of risks by relevant departments. - Maintaining and tracking a register of contracts.
2. Litigation
- Providing legal representation for the Bank before judicial and quasi-judicial bodies.
- Conducting legal research, providing competent legal opinions, drafting court processes, and ensuring that filing and service are done in a timely manner.
- Assisting the Company Secretary and Head of Legal Services in coordinating work and managing external legal counsel.
3. Processing and Attending to Court Documents
- Acknowledging and ensuring timely replies to Third-Party Debt Orders.
- Attending to and preparing competent and accurate responses to warrants and orders from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Financial Intelligence Authority, Malawi Revenue Authority, Fiscal Police, or any other government regulatory authority/entity.
4. Advisory
- Providing legal support and advice to the Bank through the Company Secretary and Head of Legal Services.
- Keeping up to date with any changes in relevant areas of law and advising the Bank on compliance.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills/Competencies
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized and accredited university.
- Three (3) years of relevant experience working as legal counsel, preferably as in-house counsel.
- Good knowledge of banking and finance law; financial services regulation; commercial law; company law; the law of contract; and labor laws.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
