The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments: and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization.
The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job Title : Database Administrator

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The following are the key duties and responsibilities:
- Building database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end user’s specialized role;
- Designing and implementing databases in accordance with end user’s information needs and views;
- Defining users and enabling data distribution to the right user, in appropriate format and in a timely manner;
- Build database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end user’s specialized role;
- Design and implement database in accordance to end users’ information needs and views;
- Define users and enable data distribution to the right user, in appropriate format and in a timely manner;
- Use high-speed transaction recovery techniques and backup data;
- Minimize database downtime and manage parameters to provide fast query responses;
- Provide proactive and reactive data management support and training to users;
- Determine, enforce and document database policies, procedures and standards;
- Perform tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy and integrity;
- Monitor database performance, implement changes and apply new patches and versions when required.
Academic and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a relevant discipline with a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in database development for the delivery of information systems with sound knowledge of software development and internet technologies using current tools and methodologies.
- Experience in Relational Database Data Modelling, construction of Entity-Relationship Models and mapping these to a physical database schema
- Experience and knowledge of web-based programming languages, web-services, relation database management products, e.g. Java, XML, MySQL etc. Open-Source products and open standards knowledge is essential.
- Experience in analysis/design and programming on development of systems using relevant W3C standards, JAVA SCRIPT, VB SCRIPT, PHP, SSL, ASP.NET technologies;
- Sound knowledge and experience with PHP, MySQL, Apache, and ASP.NET, XML, HTML, XHTML, DHTML, SQL Server, Postgress, Oracle and other database systems;
- Experience with National Single Window developments and implementation is preferred;
- Knowledge and experience of introducing electronic payment interfaces is essential;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
