Role: Permanent

Purpose

The position exists to support the execution of JTI Leaf Malawi Environment Social Governance (ESG) strategy, as well as leading sustainability initiatives and projects, supporting the business areas. Contribute to meeting the local and global commitments, monitoring, reporting, auditing, and communicating related performance. This role will also be responsible for coordinating the internal Supply Chain Due Diligence (SCDD) process, which aims to identify and mitigate risks covering the company’s priority strategic themes: human rights, grower livelihood, natural resource management and climate change. The role will also be responsible for providing technical, agronomic and market support to JTILM’s contracted (tobacco) growers who grow other cash crops that complement the farmer’s income, support crop rotation, and best practices in tobacco farming.

WHAT YOU WILL DO: RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct planned, regular field visits to growers through a structured Visitation Plan (VP), aiming to ensure that growers employ and use best practices to ensure compliance on ESG activities namely, Agricultural Labor Practices (ALP), Supply Chain Due Diligence (SCDD), Minimum Forestry Standards (MFS) and Market Match (MM) to attain the best possible productivity and income outcome.
  • Lead the execution of action plans based on field assessments, arising from the ALP/MFS Identification process and observations.
  • Organize and deliver key trainings to growers on ALP/SCDD/MFS and Market Match program and ensure that trainings and field support is translated into positive impact using agreed measurables such as compliance to workers’ rights, live barn roofing and farmer productivity.
  • Analyse ALP/SCDD/MFS/MM reports by area and provide key recommendations.
  • Work closely and seamlessly with all internal (JTILM, growers) and external MM stakeholders (input suppliers, off-takers, trainers etc) in ensuring that all MM-related activities are executed timely and precisely.
  • Attain an understanding of IMS Procedures, JTI processes, policies, and standards effectively applying them in all day-to-day operations.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: REQUIREMENTS 

  • Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Environment, Social Sciences, Sustainability, or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience working in the tobacco industry with direct experience in ESG programs.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Packages (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent analytical skills with a high affinity for numbers.
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams & cross functions.
  • Strong, Leadership, Problem solving, People Management, Planning and Organizational Skills
