In Malawi, MSF collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the local community, particularly in the Cervical Cancer project in the Blantyre district, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza District.

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT -1 POSITION
Workplace : Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) Blantyre
Type of contract : 1 Year Fixed Term Contract with possible extension
Start date : April 2024
Main purpose of the position
| Assist the laboratory technician in carrying out laboratory-related activities, in accordance with his/her instructions and MSF protocols, security measures and hygiene standards, in order to help obtaining lab results that will help to determine patient’s treatment. |
Main Responsibilities
- Assisting in carrying out laboratory exams, preparing material, reagents and environmental work conditions, etc.
- Complying with at all times the hygiene protocols for individual and collective safety, with special focus on sterilizing the material.
- Carrying out cleaning and washing activities in the laboratory facilities and material and ensure proper waste separation and disposal.
- Following all the administrative procedures, registering the patient’s data and his/her tests’ results, keeping track of all activities.
- Participating, under the laboratory technician’s supervision, in the efficient management and organization of laboratory equipment and supply. (Equipment user maintenance, stock follow-up, storage conditions, inventory, expired substances, etc.).
- Reporting any problem arising in the laboratory, especially loss, robbery, or damage of material.
Specific Accountabilities
- Reception of cytological and histological samples. Checking that the names on form and the samples match. Communicate to lab technician about the quantity of formalin and reception of big specimen to cut.
- Registration and coding on samples with Laboratory Number in excel register. Ensuring that samples are registered in collected register based on the location of the patient.
- Assisting with centrifuging of cytological specimen.
- Filing of request forms, samples, slides and blocks in cabinets.
- Assisting Laboratory technician writing on blocks and slides.
- Practice health and safety protocols in the Laboratory.
- Recording temperature of the room and documentation.
- Disinfection of the bench and equipment in the morning and at the end of the day.
- Waste management. Ensure that waste bins have correct refuse bags, are not full and wastes are discarded at the end of each day.
