Project:  Periodic Maintenance/Rehabilitation of Golomoti-Monkey Bay/Mtakataka Turnoff (M10) Road to Bitumen Standard (30km Lot 1)

Location: Mangochi District, Malawi (site based)

Report to:  Materials Engineer

Unik Construction Company invites applications from suitably qualified, experienced and motivated candidates to fill the following positions:

1. SOIL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (2 POSITIONS)

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a Diploma or Certificate in Civil Engineering, Materials Testing or a related field from a recognizedinstitution, preferably CIRA.
• Relevant experience in soil laboratory testing and materials testing will be an added advantage.
• Candidates with previous experience working in Chinese construction companies are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key Requirements and Responsibilities

• Good practical knowledge of soil mechanics and earthworks materials.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ability to perform engineering calculations, interpret test results and maintain accurate testing records.
• Understanding of Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Plasticity Index (PI) and percentage compaction.
• Ability to prepare accurate laboratory reports.
• Basic computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Good communication and reporting skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and meet project testing schedules.
• High levels of accuracy, integrity and attention to detail.
• Assist in assessing materials for selected layers, fill, subgrade and improved subgrade.
• Collect representative soil samples from borrow pits, cuttings, embankments and other designated sources.
• Ensure proper sample identification, labelling, handling and storage.
• Maintain sampling registers, including sample location, chainage, material source and date.
• Conduct preliminary material assessments before laboratory testing.
• Assist with material source investigations and borrow pit assessments.
• Ensure all collected samples are representative of the materials being investigated.

2. BITUMEN / ASPHALT LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (1 POSITION)

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a Diploma or Certificate in Civil Engineering, Materials Testing or a related field from a recognizedinstitution, preferably CIRA.
• Relevant experience in bitumen, asphalt and road materials laboratory testing will be an added advantage.
• Candidates with previous experience working in Chinese construction companies are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key Requirements and Responsibilities

• Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ability to perform engineering calculations, interpret test results and maintain accurate testing records.
• Ability to prepare accurate laboratory reports.
• Basic computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Good communication and reporting skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and meet project testing schedules.
• High levels of accuracy, integrity and attention to detail.
• Safely and correctly sample bitumen, bitumen emulsions and asphalt.
• Conduct penetration-grade bitumen tests, including penetration, softening point (Ring and Ball), flash point and viscosity.
• Test bitumen emulsions where required, including residue by evaporation, viscosity and sieve residue.
• Conduct asphalt tests, including binder content, grading of recovered aggregate, Marshall stability, flow, bulk density and air voids.
• Determine the density of cores taken from completed road surfacing.
