NEST360 is a multi-country alliance committed to reducing neonatal mortality through innovative technologies and health systems strengthening. With new funding from the Beginnings Fund, the program is expanding its proven quality improvement (QI) strategies to include maternal health, ensuring integrated care for mothers and newborns. In Malawi, NEST360, implemented by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), continues to support the Ministry of Health (MoH) by scaling up lifesaving maternal and newborn interventions. This includes deploying innovative technologies, strengthening clinical and technical capacity, and establishing a sustainable supply chain and distribution network. The Beginnings Fund focuses on enhancing maternal and newborn care at secondary and tertiary healthcare levels in Malawi, with extension to immediate newborn care at Primary level BeMONC sites.

To drive this mission, KUHeS NEST360/BEGINNINGS FUND intends to recruit a suitably qualified candidate to fill the position of ICT Specialist.

JOB SUMMARY

The ICT Specialist / Developer will lead the technical integration, optimization, and long-term sustainability of neonatal data systems within Malawi’s national health architecture. This role is pivotal in connecting REDCap-based neonatal data with existing Government of Malawi systems, particularly the Malawi Health Information System (MAHIS), and ensuring a seamless, government-led transition of ICT assets and capabilities. The ICT Specialist will not only drive system development and performance but also serve as a technical mentor to government ICT teams, embedding knowledge and best practices to guarantee system continuity beyond the program’s lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

System Architecture & Development

  • Lead the end-to-end design, development, testing, deployment, and iterative improvement of neonatal data systems, ensuring scalability, performance, and alignment with national health priorities.

System Integration & Migration

  • Oversee the migration and replication of neonatal data platforms onto Government of Malawi ICT infrastructure, ensuring full interoperability with national systems including DHIS2 and MAHIS.

Technical Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Provide expert technical direction and hands-on mentorship to government ICT teams, facilitating structured knowledge transfer and strengthening in-country ownership of digital health assets.

Data Security & Reliability

  • Implement and uphold robust data governance, security protocols, and system reliability standards to safeguard patient information and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

User Support & Optimization

  • Support national and district-level users through responsive troubleshooting, and continuous system optimization to enhance usability and impact.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education & Certifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in full-stack or backend development, with demonstrable experience in health information systems or large-scale data platforms.

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Technical Competencies:

  • Strong proficiency in Java, React, SQL, and Android application
  • Hands-on experience with REDCap system configuration, customization, and API integration.
  • Proven track record of integrating disparate systems and managing data migration in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
