The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.

BCM-CFM invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions:

Medical Officers – Global HOPE (Hematology-Oncology-Pediatric-Excellence)

The Medical officer will be responsible in providing medical care to children with cancer and blood diseases, organize and manage day to day clinical activities, conduct research as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and IRB-approved protocols, and participate in educational and quality improvement activities.

Essential Functions and Duties:

 Provide Evidence-based Medical Care to Children with Cancer and Blood Diseases.

  • Take history, perform physical examination and initiate diagnostic work-up of children in allocated patient care areas.
  • Provide emergency care and resuscitation of children in allocated patient care areas.
  • Assess and treat complications of cancer and /or blood diseases in allocated PHO care areas.
  • Schedule and order monitoring studies according to established treatment guidelines.
  • Perform bedside invasive procedures including bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy administration, and other procedures and duties as may be instructed by the attending consultant/faculty.

Organize and Manage Day to Day Clinical Activities

  • Participate in out-of-hours (night and weekend) on-call clinical service according to the On-call roster or as required by the supervisor.
  • Ensure adequate preparation for clinical activities (e.g. ward rounds) including patient medical evaluations, laboratory and diagnostic studies, and any necessary equipment.
  • Present succinct summaries of patients at ward rounds, in clinics, tumor boards, and at other clinical activities.
  • Record and maintain succinct, legible, and accurate medical notes of all clinical activities in allocated patient care areas.
  • Follow-up, implement, and ensure implementation of clinical plans including surgical procedures, laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and others.
  • Maintain a medically, physically, emotionally, and aesthetically safe and conducive clinical working environment.

Conduct Research as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and IRB-approved Protocols.

  • Liaise with research assistants, coordinators, and nurses in conducting research related to pediatric hematology oncology according to SOPs.
  • Perform research procedures as may be indicated in research SOPs.
  • Ensure ethical conduct of research in allocated patient areas, and report any suspicion of unethical research activity whether the medical officer is part of the research project or not.
  • Interpret and present research results as may be required by the supervisor.

Participate in Educational Activities in PHO

  • Orient medical trainees including medical students, interns, senior house officers, fellows, and others on all aspects of the PHO service.
  • Present case summaries and educational reviews at educational meetings including, when applicable, Tumor Board, Journal club, Grand Rounds, and others.
  • Supervise and train medical students, interns, and clinical officers in allocated patient care areas.
  • Formulate and update an individual learning plan, in consultation with the supervisor.

 Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities and Initiatives

  • Identify QI needs in the pediatric hematology oncology service
  • Initiate, design, and conduct QI Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.
  • Present QI findings and recommendations to the PHO multidisciplinary team

 Qualification and Experience

  • Medical Degree; MB, ChB or its equivalent, from a reputable institution
  • Min of three years’ experience in the field
  • Successful completion of medical internship
  • Prior experience in pediatrics is desired
  • Registration as medical practitioner with the country’s licensing authority
  • Possession of unexpired annual practitioner’s medical license from the country’s local licensing authority
  • Certificate of good standing from the country’s local licensing authority
  • Research experience will be an added advantage.
